The Centre of Internal Quality Assurance (IDOL), Mumbai University, celebrated intellectual discourse and historical reflection, with the latest release of author Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta- ‘Savitribai Phule: Her Life, Her Relationships, Her Legacy’. The Chief Guest for the occasion Poonam Mahajan said on stage, “I admire the simplicity with which this biography of Savitribai Phule is written. Even my 11-year-old daughter can read it. ”
Further in her panel discussion with the author, She adds, “It is thanks to Savitribai Phule, that we have Indian women like Priyanka Chopra, Mary Kom and Gita Gopinath asserting global dominance today. This unique story of friendship between Savitribai Phule, Fatima Sheikh, and Sagunabai Kshirsagar, is a lesson for us that women must stand together with other women, that’s when the magic happens. ”
The central theme of the event revolved around the life and legacy of Savitribai Phule, a pioneering figure in 19th-century India, known for her significant contributions to the education movement. Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta, a bestselling author, took the audience on a captivating journey through the pages of her book, unraveling the layers of Savitribai’s life. She said, “India had its own Malala, almost 200 years ago in Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh. It’s unfortunate that we have not told their story loudly enough. Only 5 states in India know about Savitribai Phule’s work- Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. We need to take her story all over the country and all over the world.”
The discussion, moderated by Swati Khandelwal Jain, Executive Editor at Zee, delved into nuanced aspects, including the role of media during that era, providing a comprehensive understanding of the historical context.
The event kicked off with an insightful talk by Daivata Patil, from the Dept of Journalism and Communication, University of Mumbai, who shed light on the education movement in 19th-century India. This set the stage for the subsequent discussion, grounding the audience in the socio-cultural and historical backdrop against which Savitribai Phule’s life unfolded.
With more than 200 students, faculty members, and guests in attendance, the event fostered an environment of intellectual engagement. The Q&A session allowed for active participation, offering a platform for diverse perspectives and queries. The vibrant exchange of ideas reflected the enduring relevance of Savitribai Phule’s legacy, transcending temporal boundaries.
The Convenor of the event, Prof. Dr. Santosh Rathod, In-Charge Director of IDOL, University of Mumbai, emphasized the significance of remembering and learning from the legacy of figures like Savitribai Phule. He said, “Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule’s biography is a source of inspiration that sheds light on the challenges she faced and the resilience she demonstrated. Her unwavering dedication to eradicating discrimination and advocating for women’s rights set a precedent or example for generations to come. Not only in English but in several other languages, such a biography needs to be written to document her pivotal role and take Savitribai to a wider readership. In fact, its significance lies in preserving her legacy and inspiring future generations.”
Marking the occasion, Prof. Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni, VC, Mumbai University said, “I am delighted to know about the book ” savitribai Phule- her life her relationships her legacy,” that throws light on her work as India’s first lady teacher and the impact she had on society. Prof. Dr. Shivaram Garje, Dean, of Science and Technology, University of Mumbai, and Anil R Banker, Director, CIQLA University of Mumbai also spoke about the contribution of Savitribai Phule and how she made education accessible for all at a time when it was not.
The event not only celebrated the achievements of a historical icon but also underscored the importance of education, particularly in the context of societal transformation.
