The romance drama Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has clocked a fabulous opening week at the box office. On the seventh day of its run, the film collected nearly ₹11.7 crore, taking the overall domestic collection to about ₹165 crore. The performance of the film was a surprise to many, particularly considering its comparatively small-scale promotion campaign and new lead cast.
Surpasses big Bollywood blockbusters
Within a week, Saiyaara had surpassed the lifetime Indian collection of Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, which had minted around ₹153 crore in India. This way, the Ahaan–Aneet movie has created a benchmark for new entrants making their mark in the industry. The film’s success has been driven primarily by good word-of-mouth and a young soundtrack.
Screens duplicated in the face of increased demand
After its resounding opening, Saiyaara’s screens were increased by theater owners from approximately 800 to more than 2,000 in India. Such a spread is not common for non-franchise releases, especially those without a star. Metro-city audiences and Tier-2 town audiences appreciated the film with high occupancy in single screens as well as multiplexes.
Record-breaking debut performance
The opening day collection of the film was ₹21 crore, which is tremendous for debuts. In its opening weekend, Saiyaara earned more than ₹80 crore internationally, which puts it into the list of the top openers of the year. The trade analysts have termed this a career turning point for both the leading actors and director Mohit Suri, who comes back to form after a short lapse.
Industry backing and prospects ahead
Industry colleagues such as actresses Rakul Preet Singh and Genelia D’Souza have also complimented the chemistry between the leads and the emotional subject of the movie. The success of the movie has reportedly led producers to postpone its OTT release to reap maximum theatrical collections. With international collections also increasing, Saiyaara is likely to breach ₹200 crore worldwide in the next few days, further establishing itself as a surprise hit.
