In the tragic murder of tennis player Radhika Yadav, one of Radhika’s closest friends, Himaanshika Singh, has finally spoken out and made some very serious claims regarding the kind of emotional pressure that Radhika was facing at home.
According to Himaanshika, Radhika was constantly monitored and judged by her parents for the choices she made — from wearing shorts to talking to male friends. She explained that Radhika didn’t feel she had any freedom or space of her own, and that the issue wasn’t a recent controversy.
In a moving video posted online, Himaanshika recalled that even little things like going out alone or taking casual video calls would make her a target for criticism or inquiry at home. Radhika was purportedly scolded for wanting to remain independent, for dressing up in the manner of a modern woman, and for being nice to boys — all of which, according to her friend, were acts of rebellion, in the eyes of her parents.
The confessions demonstrate the coercion and pressure that continue to exist for so many young women in traditional homes, where life choices and individual preference can be limited by old social mores. Himaanshika maintained that Radhika was not irresponsible or defiant; she was simply trying to live on her own terms — something that her family seemed unwilling to tolerate.
Radhika, being a good tennis player and introverted and shy by disposition, had hobbies beyond sports. She fantasized about taking up creative avenues and even expressed interest in influence and entrepreneurship, according to her friend. These ambitions, however, were seen as distractions at home, all adding to the emotional grip on her.
Although the case is pending, Radhika’s father remains in detention, the report has initiated broader discussion on parents’ control, mental illness, and social problems among young women in traditional settings.
