Over one million citizens across 21 Indian states and Union territories participated in National Reading Day 2025, with coordinated efforts led by the Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, Gyan Key Fit Key (Rural Relations Movement), Reading Coach Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta, and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi. The initiative, tagged under the campaign #IndiaReadsIndiaRises, saw significant traction nationwide.
Prominent public figures including Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor, Saiyami Kher, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Sonali Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, and Swaroop Rawal lent their support to the campaign.
The reading movement reached states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Odisha, Punjab, Kerala, and Bihar, along with the Union territories of Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
In Mumbai, 150 schoolchildren participated in a reading hour at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), an event under the Ministry of Culture. Reading Coach Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta also visited Bombay Teachers Training College, SIES College, and the independent bookstore Kitabkhana. Both private institutions and BMC-run schools took part in the initiative.
In Delhi, former Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi took part in a book discussion at IGNCA, Janpath. She noted, “National Reading Day reminds us that the shift from reading to endless scrolling is eroding our attention spans, limiting our capacity for deep work and long-term thinking.”
Gupta added, “It’s an honour to contribute to this tribute to P.N. Panicker and Prime Minister Modi’s #VancheGujarat vision. Reading is central to human advancement — and it’s time we return to it.”
