Mayyur Girotra, Delhi-based designer, continues to create remarkable history as the South-Asian (India) Designer once again opens for Pride New York, this time at the iconic Rockefeller centre in New York City. The Indian couture stalwart’s connect with the Big Apple drew him back for the launch of his newest Pride collection ‘Ride to Pride’ that captures the true spirit of inclusivity. A one-of-its-kind capsule line, it blends high fashion and traditional Indian textiles with genderless styles – every ensemble is gender fluid, inclusive and global, with the intent of breaking the binary in style and beyond.

This collection is emblematic of inclusivity, freedom, pride, self-acceptance and change – a sartorial expression for the countless members of the LGBTQ+ community to feel seen, heard and safe. “The idea was to create a safe space for people to explore and express their identities without judgment, restrictions or societal pressures,” says Mayyur.

Love is love

Mayyur has been a vocal champion of the LGBTQ+ community for many years now, and this annual Pride collection is one that is of immense personal significance to him. Every aspect of this collection is designed to represent his beliefs and value system.

“This collection is for my soul. It fills me with a sense of purpose. The final intent is to create impact and change, and in this case, I have used fashion as a medium to achieve that.” — Mayyur Girotra

A sartorial expression

Mayyur’s maximalist designs are his differentiating DNA, but he doesn’t alienate a minimalist state of mind either in the process. These two sensibilities collide and coalesce to create a harmony in design that marries the best of both worlds. All the while taking inspiration from Indian crafts and colours. Combining traditional textiles and high fashion, the line is uplifting, empowering, and flat out fabulous.

Embellished with signature Mayyur Girotra embroideries, you will find Gujarati Kutch patchwork, thread work from the brand’s archives, ikat patterns and custom prints in the line. These are tailored into silhouettes that are global, yet rooted in India. High waist pants, trench coats and oversized shirts coexist harmoniously with lehenga skirts and saris, carefully achieving a balance of cultures, values and aesthetics that is intentional and not accidental. With the use of upcycled silk and linen in every garment, the designer also sticks to his vows of mindful design in this socially conscious line. The collection oscillates between a palette of bougainvillea pink, sandy neutrals and a delicate rainbow of hues that form the tapestry of Indian culture and the Pride flag — the colours have been used to lend exuberance to this joyful collection that celebrates being different.

“I’ve always viewed fashion as far more than just clothes and embroideries. I also see it as more than just a manifestation of India’s heritage and design legacy. For me, it’s a means to inspire dialogue and conversation through the medium of craft. When you think of slow fashion, you think of pieces made to last, and pieces made with pure intentions. That’s the kind of change we are hoping to inspire by this collection — change that might be slow, but is steady and lasting.” — Mayyur Girotra

‘Ride to Pride’ was showcased on 5th June at New York Pride, with a cast of only LGBTQ+ models taking the runway at Rockefeller Centre, 5th Avenue, New York.
