Acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee recently disclosed that he was offered the role of Chunilal in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 epic film “Devdas,” starring Shah Rukh Khan. This revelation comes weeks after actor Shekhar Suman claimed he had also been approached for the same role. Bajpayee’s decision to turn down the role was driven by his desire to play the titular character instead.
A Dream Role for Many
In an interview, Bajpayee shared his thoughts on the offer and his reasons for rejecting it. “When Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached me for Chunilal’s role, I expressed my wish to play Devdas. I had always dreamt of playing such a complex and iconic character,” Bajpayee said. The actor acknowledged that while the role of Chunilal was significant, his heart was set on portraying Devdas, a character immortalized by literary legend Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and previously brought to life by stalwarts like K.L. Saigal and Dilip Kumar.
Respect for Bhansali’s Vision
Despite turning down the role, Bajpayee holds immense respect for Bhansali’s directorial vision and the grandeur with which “Devdas” was executed. “Sanjay is a brilliant filmmaker, and his interpretation of ‘Devdas’ was visually stunning. Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai were exceptional in their roles. It was a cinematic spectacle,” he remarked.
Reflection on Career Choices
Bajpayee, known for his versatile performances in films like “Satya,” “Gangs of Wasseypur,” and “Aligarh,” reflected on the importance of choosing roles that align with one’s artistic aspirations. “Every actor has a role they dream of playing, and for me, it was Devdas. I don’t regret my decision because it was true to my passion and ambition as an actor,” he explained.
Shekhar Suman’s Similar Revelation
Interestingly, Bajpayee’s disclosure follows Shekhar Suman’s recent claim that he, too, was offered Chunilal’s role but declined it. Suman expressed that although he was honored by the offer, he felt the role did not suit his persona. This adds a layer of intrigue to the casting decisions behind one of Bollywood’s most celebrated films.
A Legacy Continues
“Devdas” remains a landmark film in Indian cinema, celebrated for its opulent sets, haunting music, and powerful performances. Bajpayee’s candid admission sheds light on the behind-the-scenes choices that shape cinematic history. As he continues to take on challenging and diverse roles, fans can only imagine what his portrayal of Devdas might have been, adding another chapter to his illustrious career.
