Kuch Sapney Apne forges a rainbow trail in theaters

Kuch Sapney

In an impassioned struggle for mainstream visibility, Sridhar Rangayan & Saagar Gupta released their queer drama Kuch Sapney Apne in 10 theatres across India and the film ran for a full one week, which can be counted as a remarkable success for queer films and independent films in India.

Recently, Sean Baker’s independent film Anora swept up 5 Oscar wins and the words of Baker resonates with what Rangayan & Gupta feel, “Distributors, please focus first and foremost on the theatrical releases of your films. We are all here tonight because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with movies? At the movie theater! In a time in which our world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever: It’s a communal experience you simply don’t get at home”, said Baker in his acceptance speech.

“We had made the film for the big screen, and we put a lot of efforts to release the film theatrically across India. We are glad that so many people across India went to the theaters to watch the film. For an independent queer film, it is a big step to screen the film in 10 cities across India for a week, when much bigger films do not sustain more than three days! We are thankful to PVR INOX cinema and Cinepolis for enabling this. We are also thankful to all our partners who supported us for the release”, said Sridhar Rangayan, who is also the producer along with partner Saagar Gupta.

Saagar Gupta who is the co-director & writer said, “As independent filmmakers, the journey of not only creating but also self-distributing our film has been incredibly challenging. But we’re proud that we did it. While our reach may have been limited, we firmly believe that those who experienced the film in theatres have left with a deeper understanding and a more open, empathetic perspective”.

“Change often begins with small, meaningful steps, and we’re grateful that, through our work, we’ve been able to contribute, even in a small way, to that larger shift. With the support of all our partners it’s been a humbling experience, and we’re hopeful that the film continues to inspire and spark thought in those who watch it”, added Gupta who is also the lyricist for the three songs in the film sung by Rekha & Vishal Bhardwaj, Shaan, Shashwat Singh & Sushant Divgikar.

Pragyesh Singh, one of the producers of the film said, ““I am glad the film received a good run in the theaters. We were certain that the film will connect with a broad spectrum of viewers because it doesn’t just tell a story about the LGBTQ+ community—it tells a human story.”

The film opened on February 21st in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Lucknow, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Gurgam, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata. The premiere at PVR Citi Mall in Mumbai was supported by Keshav Suri Foundation, who believe in unequivocal support to several LGBTQ+ initiatives.

“Kuch Sapney Apne is more than just cinema—it’s a bold step towards a future where queer stories aren’t sidelined but celebrated on the big screen. Breaking barriers, one frame at a time, this film proves that representation isn’t a privilege; it’s a necessity. At the Keshav Suri Foundation, we stand by storytellers who dare to dream in full color. Here’s to more films that don’t just entertain but ignite change!”, said Keshav Suri, founder of Keshav Suri Foundation.

The film’s release was supported by several LGBTQ+ organizations across India – Mist LGBTQ Foundation in Pune and Bangalore, Pride Circle in Bangalore and Delhi-NCR and Prantakatha in Kolkata as Community Partners.

“Kuch Sapney Apne is a deeply moving film that resonates with anyone who’s ever fought for their dreams. It doesn’t just tell a story—it captures the struggles of queer people as they navigate the complex and often painful journey of seeking acceptance from their families. Sridhar Rangayan’s direction brings such heart and authenticity to the film, and Saagar Gupta’s dedication and effort truly shine through in every moment. Their passion for this project is evident, and it makes the movie all the more special. The Mist LGBTQ Foundation believes that films like this can truly speak for social change, and we are proud to support Kuch Sapney Apne in its journey to make a difference”, said Shyam Konnur, founder of Mist LGBTQ Foundation.

“Films like this help communities to connect inward with themselves, and outward to the mainstream as they are! So this is important for all of us”, said Bappaditya Mukherjee, founder & director of Prantakatha.

“Kuch Sapney Apne embodies the power of authentic storytelling. In a climate where LGBTQ+ rights are challenged, this film’s successful theatrical run proves the hunger for narratives that celebrate our shared humanity. By showcasing relatable human experiences, it fosters empathy and understanding, crucial for building a more inclusive society. We believe in amplifying such voices, as they pave the way for a future where every dream, every ‘Apna Sapna,’ is valued and respected. This film is a vital step in our collective journey towards equality”, said Ramkrishna Sinha, co-founder of Pride Circle & Rainbow Bazaar.

Other organizations like The QKnit Foundation, Sweekar- The Rainbow Parents, the Hugging Club of India and St John’s Research Institute helped as Outreach Partners. Private donors like Dan Otmar and Mohammed Khaki, alongwith ten other contributors ensured that the film reached the theaters.

“Sridhar Rangayan and Saagar Gupta’s Kuch Sapney Apne manages to cover timely, universal messages of the importance of love, family, acceptance, and human rights, showing how these can help overcome homophobia, stigma and discrimination, thereby allowing love to win. The film is packed with drama, plot twists and beautiful Indian songs, ensuring that it delivers its serious messages in a way that is both educational and entertaining. The acting is first-rate and the scenery in both Stockholm and India is absolutely gorgeous”, said Maria Ekstrand who is associated with St John’s Research Institute, Bangalore

The film was self-distributed by Solaris Pictures and TNV Films, and as the distributors said, “With limited resources we managed to give a wide reach for the film.”

The producers and distributors are considering a second phase of theatrical release since there seems to be large spread interest in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
