Karan Johar Contemplates Online Trolling: “At Least They’re Not Indifferent”

Director and producer Karan Johar has spoken out about the relentless trolling he experiences on social media, providing a new take on what it’s like to be a habitual recipient of social media abuse. Instead of being bogged down by the hate, Johar reports that he now takes it as proof that people are at least tuned in to his work—even if not always favorably.

“Better Hated Than Ignored”

Speaking in a recent interview, Johar revealed that though the internet can be cruel, it is also an indication that he has not been forgotten. “People have strong opinions, and while many of them are unpleasant, I tell myself—thank God they’re talking. The real danger is being invisible,” he remarked.

Johar added that when someone is in the public eye, reactions—good or bad—are inevitable. He has learned to take online attacks in stride and has even found a certain clarity in them. “I’d rather be discussed and criticized than be completely irrelevant,” he noted.

Trolling as an ‘Occupational Hazard’

Famous for directing, hosting a talk show, and producing, Johar admitted that his high public profile in the entertainment world understandably attracts judgment. “It comes with the territory,” he explained. “You put yourself out there, and people will respond, sometimes aggressively.

He also added that, with time, he has grown a thicker skin and does not take caustic remarks personally anymore. Although there are still messages that cut through, Johar does not allow them to determine his self-worth.

Finding Humor in Hate

Interestingly, the director admitted that he sometimes finds himself laughing at the inventiveness of trolls. “Some of them are really clever, even though what they are saying is nasty,” he quipped. That capacity to see the humor in cyber aggression, he said, has served him well in keeping him level-headed.

Karan Johar’s unguarded response to trolling is a reminder that public figures are under constant scrutiny—but that does not always have to be a chore. For him, having critics can be seen as an indication that people are still interested. And in a world that tends to move on quickly, that—he says—is small win.
