John Abraham opposes stray dog removal from Delhi, warns of health risks: ‘Neither practical nor humane’

John Abraham

Actor and animal rights activist John Abraham has strongly opposed the new Supreme Court ruling ordering the Delhi government to chase away stray dogs from the capital within eight weeks. The Pathaan actor, known for his great involvement with animal welfare organizations, argued that such a move would not only be uncivilized but could also cause major public health issues.

Issues of public health and safety

John explained that immediate eviction of stray dogs from their environments can be an ecological disruptor and lead to a rise in unchecked rodents, which in turn can contribute to mounting susceptibility to diseases to be transmitted among human beings. He asserted that street dogs are largely a natural control over pests and getting rid of them without a viable main rehabilitation plan is futile.

Criticism of feasibility

Pointing to the order as “neither practical nor humane,” John said it would be logistically impossible to move thousands of animals within a short period. He reiterated that the community has to focus on big-scale sterilization campaigns, vaccination drives, and adoption rather than mass removal.

Call for humane approach

The artist called on the authorities to work with NGOs, vets, and residents to come up with sustainable, welfare-based solutions. He cited the case of other cities where control of numbers of strays through sterilization and vaccination led to a significant reduction in conflicts without the application of inhumane displacement.

Public reaction to his stance

John’s comment gained popularity on social media very fast, with people praising his empathy and scientific sense. Some animal owners and welfare organizations also voiced his sentiments, stating the court ruling was negligent regarding the welfare of the animals and the practical difficulties of enforcement.

Continuing his campaign

This is the second time John Abraham has been loud on behalf of animals. He has protested against animal cruelty, supported adoption drives, and worked very closely with welfare bodies over the years. His recent statement is only a reaffirmation of his commitment to creating awareness about humane and pragmatic means of handling city animals.
