On the occasion of International Tea Day, actor Saanand Verma, widely loved for his eccentric and endearing roles, shared his heartfelt bond with tea—an emotion deeply woven into his personal and cultural identity. “I feel like I was born just to drink tea!” he says with a smile, reflecting on his childhood mornings that began with chai and biscuits or roti. “My mother made an amazing potato curry. We’d spread it on roti and dip it into our tea. Even now, I need something to snack on with my tea—it’s not just a drink, it’s an experience.” Saanand, however, now chooses a more health-conscious route. “I’ve had my fair share of milk and sugar chai,” he admits. “But as an actor, my body is my shop. To keep it fit, I mostly drink herbal tea or black coffee these days—without sugar.” For him, tea is more than a beverage—it’s a symbol of India’s soul. “Tea is in our DNA,” Saanand explains. “Let’s not forget, a tea seller became the Prime Minister of our country. Every gathering, every conversation here starts with chai. It’s so deeply ingrained in us—it feels like we were born in a tea kettle!” When asked whom he’d love to share a cup with, the answer comes easily. “Charlie Chaplin,” Saanand says. “He’s my idol. I don’t think a greater artist has ever lived. Having tea with him would be a dream come true.” He fondly recalls a childhood memory of sneaking sips from his sister’s cup when his own ran out. “It’s a silly but sweet memory,” Saanand laughs. “Those moments made tea even more special.” Whether it’s sipping tea during the chilly winters of Uttarakhand or London, or simply enjoying a couple of cups each day, Saanand says tea gives him peace, joy, and a lifted spirit.
