But in 2021, Rai’s banner took a dark and thrilling turn with Haseen Dillruba, a twisted tale of passion, betrayal, and murder. Directed by Vinil Mathew and written by Kanika Dhillon, this romantic thriller was produced by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma.
Haseen Dillruba stars Taapsee Pannu as Rani Kashyap, a sharp-tongued, small-town woman caught between her quiet, intense husband Rishu (Vikrant Massey) and her seductive lover Neel (Harshvardhan Rane). What begins as a seemingly ordinary love triangle quickly spirals into a deadly game of deceit and desire, culminating in a shocking climax that redefined what a romantic thriller could be. The film’s layered narrative, with its shifting timelines and unreliable narration, made it one of the most talked-about releases of the year.
For Rai and Colour Yellow, this was a significant creative departure. Known for bringing emotion and simplicity to his characters, Aanand L Rai used Haseen Dillruba to show a different side of love, one that is raw, flawed, and morally grey. The film became a sleeper hit on Netflix and built a cult following, eventually spawning a sequel, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, that topped OTT charts in 2024.
Now, as Haseen Dillruba completes four years, it stands as a milestone in Colour Yellow’s evolving storytelling journey. With Tere Ishk Mein slated for release in November 2025, Rai continues to prove that love, in all its shades, sweet, strange, or savage, is worth exploring on screen.
