Potterfans, rejoice! HBO has now officially announced its lead cast for its much-anticipated Harry Potter series remake. Months of wild speculation and fan theories came to an end as the studio finally revealed which actors will bring to life some of the most legendary characters in modern fantasy’s rich history. From a new Albus Dumbledore to a new interpretation of Severus Snape, fans now have names to associate with J.K. Rowling’s endearing characters of the wizarding world.

Get to know the new Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall

Taking the place of the wise and mysterious Albus Dumbledore is British stage stalwart Toby Stephens, famed for his authoritative presence on screen. His casting has already generated buzz among the fans, who love his gravitas and charisma.

To play the dark and troubled Severus Snape, HBO has cast Jamie Campbell Bower, a name known to fans of fantasy television shows such as Stranger Things and movies of The Twilight Saga. With his brooding on-screen presence, he is touted for bringing a new but true-to-character interpretation of the potions master.

For the stern but compassionate Professor McGonagall, Harriet Walter will step in and infuse her wit and poise into the Transfiguration classroom of Hogwarts.

A new Hagrid and the trio remain under wraps

Hagrid, the much-loved half-giant and Keys and groundskeeper at Hogwarts, will be portrayed by Ray Winstone, whose rough-around-the-edges charm and warm personality are set to do justice to the late Robbie Coltrane’s memory while introducing a fresh spin.

Surprisingly, HBO has yet to announce the actors for the main trio — Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The studio has indicated that it would like to leave the announcement special and will more than likely make them public nearer to the time of production.

Fans respond with a mix of emotions.

While most fans are eager to watch the fantastical world remade with a new cast and contemporary storytelling, others are still pining for the original movie series. Social media have been abuzz with comparisons, anticipation, and eagerness to know how different the series will be from the movies.

The series will go into production later this year and is committed to being faithful to the books, with one season per novel. With a longer-form format and greater character and lore development, the new Harry Potter series hopes to cast an entirely new spell on Fans across the globe.
