Felt humbled and honoured to play alongside artistes I’ve looked up to all my life: Tushar Lall

Recently, over 100 musicians from across the world came together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations via a livestream. Titled ‘Peace Through Music: A Global Event For Social Justice’, the celebration saw the likes of Ringo Starr,  Peter Gabriel, Aloe Blacc, Mavis Staples, Gary Clark Jr., Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready with Brandi Carlile and Yo-Yo Ma, among others. And, talented Indian musician Tushar Lall and his celebrated musical outfit, The Indian Jam Project, were also part of the coveted list for the celebration. Post the performance, Saachibaat.com caught up with Tushar to talk about the performance, how it was a much-needed act post the lockdown, performing live during COVID-19 times, and more.

Tell us about your recent performance.

This performance was a collaboration between various musicians from around the world for the 75th anniversary of the United Nations. This was executed by Playing for Change and a lot of us gathered around so that we could contribute to the spirit of the United Nations working towards world peace.

How did you make it to the line-up?

I’ve worked with Playing for Change for projects before, so we do know each other. But this one was definitely special since it had a bigger vision in place.

You featured alongside some really iconic names from the global music scene. How did that feel?

I felt humbled and honoured to play alongside artistes who I’ve looked up to all my life. It was an incredible experience sharing the same space as them.

Did you get to interact with them personally during the act?

Not particularly, since everything was virtual. But maybe that will change next year, when we get to travel freely.

Has this been a sigh of relief post the tough lockdown phase?

Yes definitely, and I can also see things returning back to their normal state for a lot of performing artistes. Considering this helps us earn our living, it definitely feels great.

How did you keep your creative spirits up during the last few months, when live performances and outdoor shoots had taken a big-time hit?

It wasn’t too easy, but again, being by yourself and stuck in your own home helps you look inwards. I think that was much needed to envision even bigger things. I’m glad I went through this phase.

You’ve started performing live again. Is there a perennial safety-related stress when you’re in a gathering these days? How do you cope as an artiste?

I cope by understanding that our compliance is mandatory for the well being of everyone around us. So even if it is doubly checking us at the airport or taking temperature before we enter venues, I understand we’re helping everyone around us stay safe (especially the ones who can’t afford getting sick).

Tell us about the projects that you’re working on currently.

I’ve been working on a lot of originals of late and I expect to release them early next year. Obviously that keeps me very excited, since my YouTube audiences will witness another creative side that I have.
