Inspired by the rich textile heritage of Gujarat, a land with a colourful and splendid history of crafts, Sangeeta Kilachand is a Revivalist whose designs draw the perfect juxtaposition between old-world charm and new-age sensibilities. The eclectic collection that beautifully showcases the historical crafts of the region is housed at Kilachand’s flagship store “Sangeeta Kilachand” in Mumbai in the design district of Kalaghoda.
This new destination offers an immersive treasured journey of time travel to an era of rich embroideries, handicrafts and delicate silhouettes that drape like a dream while keeping alive traditional artisanal forms. Inspired by the signature embroideries and techniques that have deserved a spotlight in today’s fashion vocabulary, Sangeeta Kilachand thrives at fostering and reviving these forgotten techniques that evoke a timeless regal eloquence, one stitch at a time!
“I travel extensively across Kutch & Gujarat, always curious to uncover ancient art, architecture and folk art. After dedicating years to researching the techniques and nuances of the textile and design industry in India, and collecting antique textiles for three decades, I am proud to be able to create a space for these crafts not only for textile connoisseurs but for anyone who wants to make a statement dressed in traditional craft. Each creation by our studio is widely researched, inspired and constructed, with a keen focus on distinctive design, silhouette and fabric while keeping an artisanal form alive”, says Sangeeta Kilachand
The most deeply held inspirations for the label come from the Kutch Bhuj regions of Gujarat, where the signature “Marodi” embroidery is an ancient form of hand embroidery. The gold thread is handmade by karigars and dressed on luxurious fabrics, with rich hues that come from natural vegetable dyes. This special embroidery is showcased on Sangeeta Kilachand’s signature Abhas, which is the traditional costume of the region of Kutch and can be worn even today to make heads turn!
Other craft forms from the region that can be viewed at the store include breathtaking, traditional Bandhani, Gharchola, Leheriya, and Patola housed in a space that has been visualised and designed by Sangeeta Kilachand. A beautiful central chandelier, pichwai and Tanjore artworks from her personal archives and free hanging racks for the garments & batuas are just some of the design highlights of this specialised destination
“It has been really delightful and fascinating putting together this collection of Abhas, Sarees, Lehengas, Anarkalis and Capes, for those who appreciate the beauty of Indian legacy Indian crafts and are proud to wear them in their individual style”, adds Kilachand
Sangeeta Kilachand strives to combine the luxury and decadence of a bygone era, raw handicrafts, and traditional treasures with contemporary design values and unmatched aesthetics, to create the most beautiful pieces that stand the test of time.
