Actress Bhūmi Pednekar, who has never shied away from taking bold role assignments and delivering mature performances, has shared that she rejected a plethora of big OTT offerings — some of which have gone on to become huge hits. In a recent conversation, Bhūmi spoke openly about how she would not sacrifice her intuitions to be part of a presumably big streaming success story, no matter what the stakes were.
‘Didn’t Connect With the Stories’
Bhūmi added that although she received enticing deals for large OTT web shows, she opted against signing them because the scripts didn’t excite her. I was offered a lot of work on OTT, some of which have become big hits. But I couldn’t connect with the story or character. “For me, it’s always about the story and if I can picture myself doing justice to the role,” she revealed.
She insists that her choices are more emotionally and creatively driven than commercially motivated. “Success is wonderful, but you can’t pursue it blindly. “You must believe in what you’re doing,” she says.
Strong, Impactful Roles Remain in Focus
Bhūmi, who debuted with Dum Laga Ke Haisha and went on to deliver powerful performances in movies such as Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Bala, and Badhaai Do, is known to play robust, complex women on screen. She mentioned she’s proud of the career she’s pursued — one that emphasizes content over stardom.
The actress further commented, “I’ve never wanted to do anything because it’s trendy. I’ve always wanted my work to be different for its uniqueness and message. I guess that’s why I’ve always been picky.”
Looking Ahead to New Challenges
With several big projects lined up, Bhūmi hinted that she might consider OTT more actively in the future — if the right script comes along. Digital platforms are doing brilliant work, and I’m open to being part of that. But only if the story speaks to me,” she concluded.
Her words have prompted debates about the number of actors today who are choosing roles based on content over hype — an indicator of the changing entertainment scene where personal belief is beginning to override box-office figures.
