New delhi: In a surprising turn of events, the much-anticipated biopic of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has hit a significant roadblock. Actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who was initially roped in to portray the iconic cricketer, has reportedly decided to step away from the project. The reason? A growing concern over what is being termed a “biopic overdose” in Bollywood.

Biopic Fatigue Hits Bollywood

Over the past few years, Bollywood has seen a surge in the number of biopics being produced, with several of them focusing on prominent sports personalities. This trend, while initially well-received, is now facing criticism for saturating the market. Khurrana, known for his eclectic choice of roles, seems to have recognized this shift in audience sentiment and opted out of the project to avoid being typecast or contributing further to the biopic fatigue.

The decision has reportedly left the production team in a lurch. The biopic, which was to be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan, was expected to commence shooting later this year. The project was being touted as one of the most anticipated films of 2024, especially given Ganguly’s larger-than-life persona and his significant contributions to Indian cricket.

The Challenges Ahead for the Biopic

Khurrana’s departure is a significant setback for the project. The actor had been in discussions with the producers since last year and was set to begin intensive training to authentically portray Ganguly on screen. However, with him stepping away, the producers are now faced with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement who can bring the same level of dedication and authenticity to the role.

The decision also raises questions about the future of biopics in Bollywood. While films like *M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story* and *83* were massive hits, the growing number of such films has led to concerns about redundancy and the need for fresh narratives in Indian cinema. With Ayushmann Khurrana’s exit, it remains to be seen how the producers will navigate this challenge and whether the biopic will be able to capture the audience’s interest amid this biopic glut.

For now, the project hangs in the balance, with the production team reportedly revisiting their options. Whether they will find a new lead or rework the script to differentiate it from the myriad of sports biopics remains to be seen.
