Design has the power to shape lives, and nowhere is this more evident than at Ashray, an orphanage in Bandra West, Mumbai. Architect Apoorva Shroff, Founder and Principal Designer of Lyth Design, has transformed an unused storeroom into a vibrant, hive-inspired playroom, giving children not just a space to play, but a place to dream, learn, and feel they truly belong.

For Apoorva, who has visited Ashray since childhood, this project was a way of giving back using her greatest skill: design. Within three months, what was once a storage space is now a sanctuary that sparks imagination, encourages learning, and nurtures a sense of community.

The playroom is designed as a “hive”, a symbol of safety, teamwork, and growth. Children enter through a double hexagon sliding door, reminiscent of a beehive’s entrance. Along one wall, hexagonal reading cubbies connected by rope ladders encourage exploration, adventure, and quiet reflection.

The design also embraces nature: opening up the south wall revealed a beautiful tree outside, now framed by large sliding doors that flood the space with sunlight. A colourful mural nearby carries the empowering message “you can do it”, reminding children daily of their potential.

From a LEGO wall and art display boards that celebrate creativity, to an outdoor courtyard with forest-themed murals, mats, and 3D trees that stretch into the ceiling, every element of the space invites joy and imagination. The perimeter wall proudly carries the names of the children, giving them ownership of their new environment.

“This project is deeply personal,” says Shroff. “It’s about creating more than just a room. It’s about giving these children a space where they can feel safe, inspired, and free to imagine a brighter future.”

The transformation was made possible through the generosity of multiple contributors, including NewMika Laminates, Signet Group, Consonni Contracts India Pvt. Ltd., Nitco Ltd., Jaquar, ICA, Home Decore, Cara Aluminium, Painton India, Koochie, and Grow with Love.

For the children of Ashray, this space is more than walls and furniture; it’s a reminder that they matter. By bringing creativity and compassion together, the project demonstrates how design can make a real difference in society and in the lives of those who need it most.
