Following days of radio silence, social media content creator Apoorva Mukhija, better known as the.rebel.kid online, has resurfaced powerfully on Instagram in the wake of the dramatic fallout from the India’s Got Latent episode that soured so publicly. In her resumption post, Apoorva publicly displayed the magnitude of online abuse she had suffered — posting screenshots of hundreds of rape threats, death threats, and intensely misogynistic comments that poured in when the show ended.

‘This is what my reality looked like’

Sharing a carousel of messages she received, Apoorva wrote, “This is what my reality looked like for the past few days. Hundreds of men told me what they wanted to do to me. “My silence wasn’t guilt, it was trauma.” The creator, known for her bold takes and humor, clarified that the backlash was never about content quality, but a result of mass trolling, deep-rooted misogyny, and orchestrated hate.

India’s Got Latent controversy decoded

Apoorva, along with other creators Ranveer Allahbadia and others, was part of a controversial YouTube show called India’s Got Latent, which invited widespread criticism for purportedly spreading ‘cringe’ and ‘nepotism in content creation’. The criticism soon turned into personal hate campaigns, particularly against the female panelists, while the male creators faced relatively less personal abuse.

Voices of support pour in.

Some influencers and celebrities later stepped forward to defend Apoorva. Numerous others have condemned cyberbullying and called for more effective action against online harassment. Criticism is okay, but rape threats and harassment are not. “This says something about how we treat women on the internet,” one creator wrote in defense.

Instagram return greeted with solidarity

Apoorva’s follow-up post has become widely shared and applauded for being fearless. Followers showered messages of appreciation upon her, praising her as being “strong,” “unapologetic,” and “a fighter.” Quite a few viewers apologized forever for having been on the trolling wagon or for standing silent when her behavior escalated. Apoorva’s post has triggered an even larger discussion about safety online and Indian social media culture around cancel mobs.

What will happen to Apoorva from now on?

Though she has not stated whether she will go on producing content at the same frequency, Apoorva intimated that she’s not going away. “I will speak, I will show up,” she tweeted — indicating that her voice, instead of being silenced, is just getting louder.
