Tiger Population Doubles in Chhattisgarh’s Achanakmar Reserve, Raises Hopes of Growth

In a major improvement in wildlife conservation, the tiger population of Chhattisgarh’s Achanakmar Tiger Reserve has doubled, as per the new wildlife monitoring report. Forest officials have confirmed that the reserve in the Bilaspur district now has twice the number of big cats from the last data records, showing a major achievement for the conservation programs of the state.

Camera traps and tracking verify surge

Population growth of the tiger was recorded by camera trap images, pugmark survey, and DNA analysis of scat samples from different zones of the reserve. Experts indicate that the data show a healthy increasing population and more territorial activity, which indicates improved breeding conditions and prey availability. Officials have recognized the occurrence of a few new cubs and subadults, which shows that the ecosystem is supporting natural reproduction.

Enhanced forest and prey density were major factors for success.

The increase in numbers is being credited to a combination of reasons, such as increased patrolling, decreased human interference, and attempts at preserving a balanced prey base. During the last two years, forest department squads have increased anti-poaching drives, shifted encroachments, and enhanced grassland management to provide a more tiger- and herbivore-friendly habitat. Community awareness campaigns have also helped in curbing conflict between villagers and wildlife.

Positive indicators of migration from surrounding reserves

Experts also feel that the Achanakmar reserve could have gained from the natural dispersal of tigers from neighboring reserves in Madhya Pradesh, including Kanha and Bandhavgarh. With linked forest corridors and enhanced connectivity, tigers are increasing their range, which could further enhance Achanakmar’s biodiversity. The reserve, which had earlier seen a concerning dip in tiger sightings, is now considered as a possible tiger stronghold for Central India.

Forest department sets next stage of conservation

With this promising growth, the Chhattisgarh forest department is now preparing for the next stage of its conservation plan. Plans are in the offing to tighten buffer zone protection, track breeding patterns more intensively, and intensify eco-development schemes in fringe villages. The government is also planning to introduce GPS radio-collars on important tigers to analyze their movement and use patterns more effectively.

Conservationists call for long-term strategy

Conservationists and wildlife scientists have received the news with enthusiasm but warned that long-term success will depend on continuous funding, scientific observation, and community involvement. They also stressed ensuring that forest cover is preserved and illegal operations like grazing, encroachment, and mining in tiger corridors are avoided.

The report is a shining spot in India’s tiger conservation tale and thus confirms Achanakmar’s potential as the country’s critical habitat in the tiger landscape.
