Tiananmen Square Protests

Tiananmen Square Protests

Current Status:

In China, people are still locked up in their apartments under the delusion of curtailing the spread of Covid-19. Covid-19 is used as a new tool by the Chinese Government to restrict rivals’ movements and people who are in support of democracy.

But when 10 people died in a fire at an apartment complex in Urumqi, the capital of the northwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang, people all over the country began protesting. There are reports that they were killed.

Past Resemblance:

Such mass and violent protests have not been witnessed in China since 1989. People are on roads fighting for their freedom of speech, and press and calling for democracy in the country. Though China has developed economically over the years, it is the citizens of China who have paid the price politically. Since there is no freedom, however.

They feel unsafe in public areas and even in homes.

Similar protests happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989. College students, youths, and liberals came together and protested against the government in Shanghai, Wuhan, Changsha, and Xian with more than 1,00,000 protestors. And the Chinese government ordered the military to crush them all on 4 and 5 June 1989.

As per the official records, 300 protestors were killed. Though sources reveal that approx 500 to 3000 civilians were killed.

Later, the “Pillar of Shame” statue commemorated democracy protesters who were killed by Chinese troops in 1989 at Tiananmen Square. The worst is during the massacre they also killed the people who were running for their lives. They were shot.
