Mahatma Gandhi: A Visionary Leader
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, who silently yet strongly built the foundation of Indian politics, was also a visionary world leader. In his humble abode, he solved the world’s most difficult problems and taught people the way to live life right.
And yet, even today, we choose to keep a cloth over our eyes, for it requires a lot of courage to do the right thing.
Today’s World Problems That Can Be Solved By Mahatma Gandhi’s Teachings
Ongoing Conflicts
The non-ending war in the Middle East between Hamas and Israel and the bloodshed between Russia and Ukraine is too much for the world to take anymore. It is a daily ritual to flip through newspapers, reading news of human rights violations in these countries, and even after having such esteemed international organisations like the United Nations, these conflicts are nowhere close to resolution.
While Gandhiji, throughout his life, requested his friends and followers to practice non-violence. He walked with the greater vision of world peace in his heart. He said, “If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn your other cheek”. The same was taught by Christ as well, for a persecutor enjoys killing until people resist; once they start taking the high road, he too is forced to stop.
2. Poverty and Hunger
‘The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not enough for everyone’s greed.’ Gandhi said. And right he was; from the research, it has been found that we have enough food, clothes, and basic amenities for all the people and life forms on planet Earth. However, the reason for the significant mismatch in production and delivery is greed. The very imbalance between rich and poor, have and have not, is making 50% of the earth’s population crawl on the ground because of starvation, disease, and scarcity.
3. Waste Management, Global Warming, and Climate Change
Gandhiji always asked people to wear Khadi and be self-reliant, because industries destroy our environment, and the ease of production with industries leads to mass production, then mass production leads to thousands of choices, and it further leads to uncontrollable materialism. Materialism is a vicious cycle that people definitely get into consciously, but are never able to come out of it. And in this greed and materialism, we humans destroy our planet, just to fulfill our endless wishes. If we can master this, then we can be sure.
Way Forward For Us As A Nation, As A Planet:
Today’s challenges may appear more complex than decades or centuries ago, but history keeps on repeating itself, because no matter what we are, humans and our challenges, our dilemmas, our actions, our decision making, our mistakes, our morals still revolve around a few basic universal and timeless principles. Hence, we should look for solutions in our past and from visionary leaders, for they know how to make this place a heaven for all.
