In the Samudrayaan Mission, Deep sea exploration was conducted at a depth of 5270 m using OME 6000.

In Gist:

  • The Samudrayaan Mission was launched in September 2021 under the Deep Ocean Mission.
  • The budget for the mission outlay was Rs 119 crores.
  • The Deep Ocean Mission was approved in June 2021 by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
  • Its aim was to explore the deep ocean for resources, develop deep-sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources, and support the Blue Economy initiatives that have been recently started by the Indian Government.
  • In December 2022, deep ocean exploration for Polymetallic Manganese Nodule at the Central Indian Ocean basin preliminary trial was conducted at a depth of 5270 m using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Ocean Mineral Explorer 6000 (OME 6000) in order to obtain oceanographic, geophysical, and seabed characteristics.

  • Ultimately, the mission was a great success.
  • The analysis, integration, and interpretation of the collected data revealed multiple locales of potential hydrothermal venting and mineralization on the sea floor of the Indian Ocean. Also, several new biological species have been mapped and identified.
