Sammakka Saralamma Jatara is also known as Medaram Jatara. It is a biennial tribal festival celebrated in memory and Honour of two Goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma Maa in the state of Telangana.
The worship and rituals related to Goddesses are entirely conducted by the Koya tribe priests in accordance with Koya customs and traditions. It is one of the largest tribes of Telangana. They are also scattered and found in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. They speak Koya Bhasha, which is a Dravidian language related to Gondi.
Sammakka Saralamma Jatara is to celebrate the valiant fight of the mother and daughter i.e. Sammakka and Saralamma against the Kakatiya dynasty rulers protesting the exaction of land tribute at the time of severe drought.
The Medaram Jatara at the interval of every two years at the Medaram village of the Tadvai Mandal deep in the heart of the thick forest of Mulugu district.
The Sammakka Sarala Jatra is a state festival of the Telangana people. They offer gold (jaggery) of a quantity equal to their way to the goddess and take a Holy bath in the Jampanna Vagu stream.
It is believed that after Kumbh Mela it is the Medaram Jatara that attracts the largest number of devotees in the country at one place after every 2 years.
