Sambhaji Maharaj

Sambhaji (14 May 1657 – 11 March 1689) was the second ruler of the Maratha kingdom. He was the eldest son of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire and his first wife Saibai.

He was successor of the realm after his father’s death, and ruled it for nine years. Sambhaji’s rule was largely shaped by the ongoing wars between the Maratha kingdom and Mughal Empire as well as other neighbouring powers such as the Siddis, Mysore and the Portuguese in Goa. In 1689, Sambhaji was captured, tortured and executed by the Mughals, and succeeded by his brother Rajaram I.

Sometimes Surya is represented with two hands holding a lotus in both. Sometimes he is represented with four hands, holding a flower (lotus), a conch (sankha), a discus (chakra) and a mace (gada). Let us examine

A lotus flower
The lotus flower is a symbol of purity. Just like the lotus flower struggles to rise in muddy waters, we rise up from our limitations and sufferings until we raise our consciousness and discover the divinity within us. The unfolding lotus flower petals represent the development of virtues and the awakening of human consciousness to spiritual enlightenment.

Asankha (conch)
The sound of the Sankha symbolizes the sacred mantra Om, which is the primal sound from which creating expanded.

Achakra (discus)
The chakra or discus is a powerful weapon that symbolizes dharma, which means “cosmic law and order”.

Gada(the mace)
It represents the power of knowledge; it is a symbol of the intellect (buddhi).

The Sun is known in by 12 names: Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Kha, Pusha, Hiranyagarbha, Marichin, Aditya, Savitr, Arka and Bhaskara.
