Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty conquered Kalinga in the bloody Kalinga War in 261 BCE, which was the eighth year of his reign. According to his own edicts, in that war about 100,000 people were killed, 150,000 were captured and more were affected. The resulting bloodshed and suffering of the war is said to have deeply affected Ashoka. He turned into a pacifist and converted to Buddhism.

Who is Lord Dattatreya?
Lord Dattatreya is the son of great Sage Atri Muni, whose wife was Ansuiya Mata, the most chaste Lady. Lord Dattatreya is considered as the Supreme Being Lord Vishnu with three heads.

Atri Muni was the Manas son of Lord Brahma Ji and his wife was Mata Ansuiya. Mata Ansuiya was most chaste Pativrata wife. She had got several divine powers due to her Bhakti of her husband Atri Muni. She had powers due to her Bhakti of her husband to stop even the Sun-Moon and earth rotations.

All gods wives were jealous of Mata Ansuiya due to her Pati Bhakti. Her Pati-bhakti gossip was famous even in Dev Lok and heaven. One day, Bhagwaan Shiva told this to his wife Parvati about the popularity of Mata Ansuiya. At this, Mata Parvati raged and asked Lord Shiva to take test of Mata Ansuiya.

So, finally, Bhagwaan Vishnu decided to go to the Ashram of Atri Muni along with Lord Shiva and Lord Braham Ji to take test of her Pati Vrata. Three Supreme being reached disguised of Saints and asked alms from Mata Ansuiya. She immediately went inside her Ashram for some grains, but Three Devas, objected to accept the alms from Mata Ansuiya. Three Supreme Personalities, asked Mata Ansuiya that they will accept alms only after if she comes totally nude.

Mata Ansuiay at this condition, understood everything, the plot of Supreme Personality Lord Vishnu and Lord Shvia. She also identified three Bhagwaans immediately and She took the Sankalp and made thee Devas as her tiny child of about one year of age. Bhagwaan became the son of Mata Ansuiya and three began to play at the Ashram of Atri Muni. When Mata Parvati and Lakshmai noticed this, They were amazed and reached the Ashram. But three Bhagwaans like sons of Atri Muni were pleased and mata Ansuiya also treated them as her own sons.

Mata Ansuiya welcomed her daughter in- laws at her Ashram and at the request of her daugther-in-laws, she returned her sons for their abode Param Dham, which shocking feelings. Bhagwaan Vishnu, assured her that from that day, he would be her son as Dattatreaya, because he was not born, but adopted and they came to take test of Mata Ansuiya
