Pathankot

Pathankot
The history of Pathankot can be traced back to the ancient period of the Mahabharata. It is believed that the city, which was named ‘Prathisthan’ during that time, was under the kingdom of Audambra.
The city has been a significant place in the past, as suggested by antique coins found in the region. During the 17th century, it was under Pathania Rajputs, who ruled from Nurpur in Himachal Pradesh.
Till 1781, it was also ruled by Sayed Khan, a Muslim descendent of the kings of Nurpur. It was known as ‘Paithan’ during that time.

Another theory states that the city derives its name from the Pathans, who settled during medieval times. After independence, it became a part of the state of Punjab and many immigrants from Pakistan settled here after partition.
