Taliban advances in Afghanistan

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. Indian Mission in Kabul had facilitated the return of more than 383 members of the Hindu and Sikh community in Afghanistan to India.

2. Sri Lanka is planning to deepen its ties with India in various sectors including defence, connectivity, trade and people to people. On Thursday (August 12, 2021) the Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi released a 27 page “Integrated Country Strategy ” that highlighted the complementarities between India and Sri Lanka.

3. India participated in a meeting of key countries hosted by Qatar on 12 Aug (Thursday) to discuss the situation in Afghanistan against the backdrop of the Taliban’s massive offensive.

4. India on 12 Aug joined a regional conclave hosted by Qatar to discuss ways to contain the escalating situation in Afghanistan in the backdrop of the Taliban’s continued offensive across the country.

5. Civil Aviation ministry increases cap on India-UK flights to 60 services per week from Aug 16 onwards.

4. *China rejected criticism from Canada over separate court proceedings involving two detained Canadians.* : Chinese foreign ministry said that remarks by Canada over the cases this week of Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, whose appeal against the death penalty in China for drug smuggling was rejected, and Michael Spavor, who was jailed for 11 years on charges of espionage, were an infringement of China’s sovereignty.

5. The United States & Britain said they would send thousands of troops to Afghanistan to help evacuate civilians, as the Taliban stood poised for their two biggest military victories since they began a broad offensive in May.
