1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra for the next two days. The weather department said that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue over these regions thereafter for the next few days.

2. The NITI Aayog meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is scheduled to take place on July 27, days after the Budget was tabled in the Parliament.

3. The Coal and Mines Minister, G. Kishan Reddy said the government has no plan in privatising coal mines across the country. He stated this while replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha.

4. The Union Government clarified that there is no proposal to discontinue NEET (UG) and restore state-wise entrance examinations at present amid controversies over the medical examination. This was stated by Minister of State for Education, Dr Sukanta Majumdar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

5. The Assam Cabinet has decided to repeal the Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules 1935 vide the Assam Repealing Bill 2024, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced recently.

6. Shiv Sena, headed by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, is keen to contest on 126 out of the 288 seats in the upcoming assembly polls.

7. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has backed the Kerala government for its appointment of an IAS officer for ‘matters concerning external cooperation’. He said he would see this as a purely routine focal point appointment rather than an appointment of a new position in any way that would challenge the authority of the union government.

The Pinarayi Vijayan government has given IAS officer K Vasuki, the Secretary of Labour and Skills Department, the additional charge of “the matters connected with the External Cooperation”. The BJP opposed the move, saying it was “unconstitutional” and a “flagrant violation of the federal principles”.

8. Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy has asserted that he is ready to stage fast unto death in New Delhi in protest against the Central Government’s discriminatory attitude towards Telangana, concerning the allocations made in the Union budget 2024 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday.

9. In Uttarakhand, rain continues to lash various parts of the state. Our correspondent has reported that about a hundred rural roads in the hilly areas of the state are blocked for traffic due to landslides at various places.

10. Over 23 lakh new workers have been enrolled under Employees’ State Insurance, ESI Scheme in May this year. Labour and Employment Ministry said, out of the total 23 lakh employees, more than 11 lakh employees belong to the age group of upto 25 years. The Ministry said, net enrolment of female members in May was four lakh 47 thousand.

11. The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday passed the Andhra Pradesh Land Titling Repeal Bill 2024 to scrap the law. It also passed the Dr YSR University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2024, that restored the name of former chief minister N.T. Rama Rao to the varsity.

1. In a significant move to clear pending cases and promote amicable settlements, the Supreme Court will organise Special Lok Adalat from 29th July to 3rd of next month. This initiative marks a milestone in the Supreme Court’s 75th year of establishment.

3. In Bihar, the state assembly passed a stringent bill to curb paper leak cases, malpractices and irregularities in government competitive examinations. The Bihar Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill 2024 which proposes jail sentence from three years to 10 years and penalty up to one crore rupees in serious cases was introduced by Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary.

4. The Supreme Court has amended its rules related to the court’s working hours. According to the amendment, the new working hours will be 10 AM to 5 PM.

5. Observing a trust deficit between farmers and the government, the Supreme Court on Wednesday proposed the constitution of an independent committee comprising eminent persons to reach out to the protesters and address their demands. The apex court also directed Haryana and Punjab to maintain the status quo at the Shambhu border.

6. Bilkis Bano case, the Supreme Court has dismissed a plea of two convicts out of the 11. Their plea had challenged SC’s January verdict on cancelling their remission. A two-judge bench comprising of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar disbanded the petition calling it “absolutely misconceived.” It also said that the court cannot sit in a petition over which the apex court had already passed an order.

7. Bhopal police commissioner Harinarayan Chari Mishra on Wednesday invoked relevant provisions of Indian National Security Act making it mandatory for the organisers to seek police permission to hold rallies, public meetings and demonstrations.

3. The highly successful film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has found itself in the midst of a legal controversy. Former Congress leader and Kalki Dham Peethadheeshwar Acharya Pramod Krishnam has issued a legal notice to the filmmakers and actors, accusing them of distorting religious texts and disrespecting Hindu deities.

Directed by Nag Ashwin, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is a post-apocalyptic film set in the year 2898 AD and inspired by Hindu scriptures. Despite its box office success as the highest-grossing film of the first half of 2024, the film has sparked significant backlash for its portrayal of Lord Kalki.

1. The body of leading seaman Sitendra Singh, who went missing after Indian warship INS Brahmaputra tipped over at the naval dockyard in Mumbai on Monday, has been recovered from the waters after intensive diving operations, the Indian Navy said.

2. Indian Navy on Wednesday rescued an injured Chinese mariner by performing his successful medical evacuation from a bulk carrier off Mumbai.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, received a distress call on July 23 from bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN 200 Nm (approximately 370 km) from Mumbai. The caller reported heavy blood loss due to a critical injury to the 51-year-old Chinese mariner and requested immediate evacuation.

3. Indian Army deploys 500 Para Forces commandos to neutralise over 50 Pakistani terrorists in Jammu. the Indian Army is strategically readjusting its forces based on recent intelligence assessments and evolving security needs.

4. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday successfully flight-tested the second phase of its Ballistic Missile Defence System, which is capable of defending against hostile missiles with a range of 5,000 km.

The missile defence system was tested at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, and it fully met all the trial objectives.

5. The government has decided to reserve 10 per cent of vacancies in the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles for ex-Agniveers, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.
