PM Modi will preside over a debate on maritime security

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. PM Modi will preside over a debate on maritime security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 9. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

2. Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar will attend the inauguration of Iranian president-elect Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran on August 5.

3. The Indian Navy is set to junk the proposed acquisition of 13 MK-45 anti-surface and anti-air gun systems from the US for its 11 under-construction frigates and destroyers.

4. Indian Air Force (IAF) chief RKS Bhadauria met his UAE counterpart Ibrahim Nasser M Al Alawi & held wide-ranging talks to identify avenues & measures for further strengthening the robust relationship between the two forces.

5. All Four Quad Countries To Take Part In Next Edition Of Malabar Exercise: The Indian Navy is deploying a naval task group comprising four frontline warships to the South China Sea, Western Pacific and South East Asia for over two months beginning early August, in a significant move aimed at enhancing its profile in the strategically key sea lanes.

6. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD, also known as the Quad) is a strategic dialogue between the United States, Japan, Australia and India that is maintained by talks between member countries.

7. Russia’s foreign intelligence chief says his organisation is in close contact with the Indian security establishment over the fast deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, a comment that signals closer security partnership between the two nations.

8. Taliban unwilling to talk to India unless Govt remains neutral in Afghan conflict.
Afghanistan has seen a fresh spell of violence erupt in the last few days, in the aftermath of the withdrawal of US-NATO troops from the country. Intense fighting has been reported from most parts of the country between the Afghan security forces and the Taliban fighters.

9. India is believed to be building a naval facility on the remote Mauritian island of Agalega in the south-western Indian Ocean.

1. On 01 Aug at least three rockets struck Kandahar airport in southern Afghanistan overnight, as the Taliban pressed on with their sweeping offensive across the country. This lead to cancel all flights from the airport.

2. Bangladesh receives third consignment of AstraZeneca vaccine from Japan, set to ramp up vaccination in the country.

3. Residents of a besieged Afghan city were urged to evacuate on Tuesday as the army prepared a major offensive against Taliban insurgents after three days of heavy fighting.

4. China starts vaccination campaign for teenagers aged 12-17 years in a bid to curb fresh COVID outbreak.

5. The Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, has lifted the lockdown and has reopened. Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance remains closed. Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic
