First day, first show, first press conference, new Team India coach Gautam Gambhir oozed confidence as he and BCCI chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar spoke to the media on Monday in Mumbai.
First things first, Gambhir means business and he will not try and disturb too much. He was full of appreciation for Rohit Sharna, the current ODI captain and seasoned star Virat Kohli. “Rohit and Virat have a lot of cricket left in them,” said Gambhir. He was quick to add that fitness was the most important issue, as both the men are well past their mid-30s. It is on the request of Gambhir, Rohit and Virat agreed to join the Indian team for the ODIs in Sri Lanka. The big picture is the Champions Trophy next year. Gambhir wants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be part of it.
For weeks, there has been suspense on Gambhir as coach and what kind of a vision he has for India. The press conference cleared many doubts. “After my appointment as coach, I and Rohit had exchanged messages,” said Gambhir. It means, there are no differences between the two Delhi cricketers who had played together in the past. “I had a very good relationship with him (Kohli), he is a world class athlete,” added Gambhir
As regards Suryakumar Yadav becoming the next T20 captain, there was clarity from the BCCI think-tank. The general feeling is Hardik Pandya, now overlooked for leadership, needs to work hard on fitness. It is well known Pandya has battled fitness issues and been away from domestic cricket. The thrust is that all Indian players embrace first class cricket as well.
Pandya is not a spent force and he will be valuable for India. The onus is on him to take up the challenge now play. The demand for playing first class cricket from the BCCI is a just one as many players have taken their places for granted.
