1. Two-day Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Foreign Ministers’ Retreat began in New Delhi yesterday. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar welcomed his counterparts.

2. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today said India is a proactive partner furthering BRICS agenda of inclusive growth and sustainable development. The Lok Sabha Speaker is leading the Indian delegation to the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

3. Union Culture Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated a photo exhibition – “Thailand-India Interwoven Legacies: Stream of Faith in Buddhism” at the National Museum in New Delhi.

4. A thirteen-member delegation from Bangladesh is on a visit to India from the 9th to the 12th of this month to assess the possibilities of transhipment of Exim cargo of Bangladesh through Indian ports located on the East Coast. The delegation is led by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh S M Mostafa Kamal.

5. India and Taiwan implemented a Mutual Recognition Agreement for Organic Products recently. This agreement facilitates trade by allowing certified organic products from both countries.

1. The Colombo Security Conclave (CSC), a regional security grouping, welcomed Bangladesh as its fifth member at the 8th Deputy National Security Adviser (DNSA) level meeting hosted virtually by Mauritius. The CSC includes India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and the Maldives, with Seychelles participating as an Observer State.

2. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recently made a significant announcement, approving the designation of 11 new Biosphere Reserves across 11 countries.

3. Russian authorities on Thursday (Jul 11) added late opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya to the official federal list of “terrorists and extremists”.

4. An Iraqi criminal court on Wednesday (Jul 10) sentenced to death the wife of slain Islamic State leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. She has been accused of working with the ISIS group and detaining Yazidi women.

5. The prosecutors in Switzerland took a landmark decision of banning a ‘death capsule’ which has been designed for carrying out assisted suicides before it was about to be used for the first time.

The machine called Sarco – a short form of the sarcophagus – allows euthanasia patients sitting inside it to press a button and die ‘within seconds’, as per the company Exit Switzerland, which created it.
