On 9th July 2024, Tuesday, a video uploaded on Social Media by a senior Trinamul Congress functionary in Kolkata and follow up news stories on certain Bengali New Channels caught our attention because of its disturbing content directly involving the top functionary of the All India Football Federation.
If the content of the video is true, then it is amply clear that the AIFF President, Mr. Kalyan Chaubey, made an unauthorized attempt to sell a position in the AIFF and Indian football structure in general to the said TMC functionary in exchange for favours in his current electioneering process in the Maniktala constituency in Kolkata.
The development is truly alarming for the AIFF and Indian football because it is a serious breach of trust by Mr. Chaubey towards the organization he heads on the virtue of being entrusted with the position by a majority of the AIFF members.
Under the circumstances, it is high time the AIFF Executive Committee launched an immediate official inquiry into this issue and requested Mr. Chaubey come clear of it. Till then, the Executive Committee should direct Mr. Chaubey to step aside as the President of the AIFF.
The AIFF members, I am confident, have realized by now that the matter is extremely serious, and unless nipped in the bud, could destroy the basic fabric of Indian football. The members will have to stand up and do everything to arrest the rot.
