Sanjukta Dutta, an acclaimed designer known for her unique Mekhela Chador garments that blend traditional Assamese silk with diverse cultural motifs, presented her creations at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. Dutta will walk the red carpet in her own designs for the first time on 24th May. While, supermodels Mirka Oktavia Hendro and Valeriya Hjertenaes will showcase her creations on 24th May.
Dutta’s designs have previously graced prestigious fashion events such as Milan, Paris, and New York Fashion Weeks, and she has been a regular at Lakme Fashion Week with Bollywood celebrities as showstoppers. Her portfolio includes styling for A-list actresses such as Priyanka Chopra, Malaika Arora, Sonakshi Sinha, Raveena Tandon, Neena Gupta, Nora Fatehi, Bhumi Pednekar, Huma Qureshi, Pooja Hegde, Nushrat Bharucha, Manisha Koirala, Mrunal Thakur, Raima Sen, and Shamita Shetty. She has also crafted the traditional ‘Anga-vastra’ for British royals.
Sharing her excitement for Cannes 2024, Dutta stated, “I am absolutely thrilled about this year’s theme for Cannes! She further elaborated on how the theme has inspired her to bring her culture and roots to an international platform, saying, “The theme has provided a perfect canvas to blend traditional elements with modern aesthetics, creating pieces that are not only visually stunning but also tell a profound story. The anticipation of seeing my creations come to life on the red carpet is immense. This theme has inspired me to delve into the cultural depths of our artisanal techniques, infusing them with a fresh, avant-garde twist. In 2019, Dutta’s Assamese silk gown was worn by Top Model UK winner Ingrida Ilgine at the Cannes Film Festival. Her designs have also been showcased on red carpets at the Rome and Venice International Film Festivals. In 2023, models Ingrida Ilgine and Marika Howard sashayed down the Cannes red carpet in outfits sourced from Dutta’s atelier.
Sanjukta Dutta’s return to Cannes promises to be a celebration of Assamese heritage and contemporary fashion, continuing her mission to bring local handloom to an international audience.
