1. The first phase of Lok Sabha Elections concluded at 6 pm on Friday, marking the commencement of the world’s largest democratic exercise. With a staggering 970 million eligible voters, this monumental election is set for a long and winding path across 44 days before culminating in the seventh phase on June 1.
2. The biggest chunk of seats in the first phase were from Tamil Nadu, where all 39 seats went to the polls. Top leaders from Tamil Nadu who were on the ballot included the DMK’s Kanimozhi (Thoothukudi), Dayanidhi Maran (Chennai Central), TR Baalu (Sriperumbudur) and BJP’s K Annamalai (Coimbatore).

5. The Kerala Health Department is set to introduce detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the outbreak investigation and control of at least eight infectious diseases as part of its One Health initiative.
*The One Health project is currently being implemented as part of the World Bank-aided Rebuild Kerala project in four districts of the state: Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki. The project aims to establish a community-based disease surveillance network where trained One Health volunteers can report unusual events or deaths of animals/birds in their locality.
6. Punjab resident Baldev Kumar has become the first person from outside Jammu and Kashmir to contest Lok Sabha polls in the Union Territory. He filed his nomination papers from the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency as an independent candidate on Friday.
7. Taking a dig at Pakistan without naming it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said a country which was a supplier of aatank (terror) is struggling for aata (flour) these days. He said while addressing an election rally at Damoh in Madhya Pradesh.

1. Firing by armed miscreants outside two polling stations in Meitei-dominated Imphal valley, damage of EVMs by angry voters and poll-boycott by a Kuki organisation marred poling on Friday for the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Manipur.
2. Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) deputy director general (DDG) Sanjay Kumar Singh, who headed an SIT that gave a clean chit to actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case, has taken VRS just 8 months before his retirement.
He is also holding an enquiry against former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede on charges of alleged irregularities while conducting an investigation into two drug cases when the latter headed the NCB Mumbai office.
3. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accuses the Enforcement Directorate of politicising his diet choices. While defending his food intake, the Delhi CM states that it aligns with his doctor’s prescribed diet chart. Kejriwal further requests insulin administration in jail as per his medical needs.
4. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday suspended OCs of two police stations in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district for their alleged failure to stop violence during Ram Navami celebrations.
5. The Supreme Court on Friday asked yoga guru Ramdev to implead the complainants, who have lodged cases against him over his alleged remarks against the use of allopathic medicines during the Covid pandemic, as party in his plea seeking stay of criminal proceedings.
The Patna and Raipur chapters of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have lodged complaints in 2021 alleging Ramdev’s remarks were likely to cause prejudice to Covid control mechanism and may dissuade people from availing proper treatment.
6. Rail traffic on the Ambala-Amritsar route was hit as farmers squatted on rail tracks in Shambhu near the Punjab-Haryana border for the third day on Friday, demanding the release of three farmers arrested by the Haryana Police.

Canara Bank has set May 15 as the record date for a stock split to divide one share into five shares with a face value of ₹2 each. The public sector lender’s board approved the stock split proposal in February to improve liquidity.

The biggest theatrical deal goes in the name of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2. According to industry estimates, Anil Thadani has acquired Pushpa 2 for a sum of Rs. 200 crores for North India.
The second best is the Prabhas and Deepika Padukone film, Kalki. The theatrical rights of the sci-fi saga have been sold to Anil Thadani for Rs. 100 crores, making it the 2nd biggest of the lot. The film is gearing up to release by the end of May.
Third on the list is Ram Charan and Shankar’s Game Changer. According to industry experts, Game Changer has been sold to Anil Thadani for Rs. 75 crore in North India.

1. Nalin Prabhat, a 1992 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG).
2. Brigadier Priya Jeyaraj of Army Dental Corps has become the first woman officer to lead the Armed Forces Dental Clinic AFDC New Delhi.
3. 5th edition of India- Uzbekistan joint military Exercise DUSTLIK . The Exercise is scheduled to be conducted from 15th to 28th April 2024 at Termez, the Republic of Uzbekistan. Exercise DUSTLIK is a yearly event conducted alternatively in India and Uzbekistan. Last edition was conducted at Pithoragarh (India) in February 2023.
4. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is planning to test the new long-range Astra Mk-2 Air-to-Air (A2A) Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile in the next few months. The Astra Mk-2 is a longer-range variant of the Astra Mk-1 A2A BVR missile, which is currently used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from the Russian Sukhoi-30 MKI jet.
5. India delivered the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines on Friday, as part of the $375 million deal between the two sides signed in 2022.
The Indian Air Force sent its American-origin C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft with the missiles to the Philippines to deliver the weapon system to the Philippines’ Marine Corps.

Tri-Services All Women Around the World Blue Water Sailing Expedition : An all-women crew comprising 12 officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force has completed a four-week rigorous sailing expedition in the Arabian Sea ahead of a global circumnavigation competition that is scheduled in September this year.
The crew went on the journey under the banner of the Army Adventure Wing and the Army Aqua Nodal Centre of the College of Military Engineering.
7. The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and development of technologies to address health issues faced by soldiers in difficult terrains.

The Government of India has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, PVSM, AVSM, NM, currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, as the next Chief of the Naval Staff with effect from the afternoon of April 30, 2024. He will succeed the present Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, who retires from service on the same day.
