1. The Budget Session of Parliament begins with President’s address to joint sitting of both the Houses: President Smt. Droupadi Murmu has asserted that the grand edifice of a developed India will stand on four strong pillars of youth power, women power, farmers and the poor. President highlighted the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. She also listed the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, banning triple talaq and other measures taken by the government in the last ten years.

2. Chairman of the High-Level Committee on One Nation One Election, Shri Ram Nath Kovind met and interacted with Praful Patel and Sunil Dattatray Tatkare of NCP as part of his consultations with political parties.
3. Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a leading institution for Journalism and Mass Communication, has been declared as a deemed to be University under a distinct category by the Education Ministry on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

4. The Government appoints Members of 16th Finance Commission:
Former Finance and Expenditure Secretary Ajay Narayan Jha, who was also the member of 15th Finance Commission, has been appointed as full-time member along with Annie George Mathew, former Special Secretary in Department of Expenditure and Niranjan Rajadhyaksha, Executive Director of Artha Global.

5. Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Arjun Munda inaugurated Girls Hostel (Phalguni) and ASRB Building-Chayan Bhawn at Pusa Campus in New Delhi.

6. Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra chief priest Acharya Satyendra Das on Wednesday reacted to Varanasi district court’s order allowing the Hindu side to hold prayers inside the Gyanvapi mosque, saying a wrong has been been rectified.

7. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has opened bidding for the PFRDA- Tracking Reporting Analytics and Compliance E-Platform (TRACE) RFP as part of Technology Architecture (TARCH) project.

8. Former Kerala MLA P C George merged his Kerala Janapaksham (Secular) party with BJP. The merger took place in the presence of Union Ministers V Muraleedharan and Rajeev Chandrasekhar and senior Party leader Prakash Javadekar at BJP headquarters in New Delhi.

9. The Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet chaired by CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy has approved several key decisions about the State. The Cabinet has given the green signal for the release of the Mega DSC (District Selection Committee) notification and approved the allocation of 6,100 posts for the maintenance of the DSC.

*It has approved the decisions of filling 689 posts in the Forest Department and having a Panchayat Secretary for each Gram Panchayat across the State. The Cabinet also gave its nod for the creation of the post of Registrar to RJUKT (Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies) and increasing the retirement age of non-teaching staff working in universities and higher education institutions from 60 to 62.

10. Haryana CM Manohar Lal inaugurated the “Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness” at the Psychology Department of Kurukshetra University at Kurukshetra.

11. The Haryana government has set a target of spraying nano-urea on one lakh acres of land in the State. Under the scheme, the government will provide nano-urea to farmers at half the price. Farmers in all districts of the State can apply for the scheme on the portal till the 15th of February, 2024.

12. The government of Meghalaya has notified all schools within the state to commence the academic season on February 15 to ensure the smooth conduct of the academic session for the year 2024.

13. In West Bengal: Trinamool Congress Chief & West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday declared thatvshe would not leave any Lok Sabha seat for Congress following a seat-sharing. Accusing the Congress and the CPI-M of collusion to strengthen the BJP in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Banerjee asserted that only the Trinamool Congress was actively Opposing the saffron party.

14. Senior Cadet Captain Ulfat Khan, hailing from one of the first villages on the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri, has made history by becoming the first-ever girl cadet selected as Parade Commander at the Prime Minister’s rally during the Republic Day Camp 2024 held in New Delhi.

15. PM Modi will be the recipient of the first ‘Shiv Sanman Puraskar,’ which will be given in the name of legendary Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The award distribution ceremony will be held on February 19 at Satara in Maharashtra. Udayan Raje Bhosale, a descendant of Shivaji Maharaj and a Rajya Sabha BJP MP, made the announcement.

1. Jharkhand to get new CM as Hemant Soren resigns, gets arrested by ED: Champai Soren is set to become the new chief minister of the Indian state of Jharkhand, after Hemant Soren resigned from the post and was arrested by enforcement directorate officials.

2. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has lodged an FIR against senior ED personnel at the SC/ST police station here over searches conducted by the agency at his Delhi residence. Soren alleged that the ED conducted the search operation at his residence in the national capital to “harass and malign him and his entire community”.

3. Security personnel have discovered a 70-metre-long tunnel dug by Naxalites in a dense forest along the border of Dantewada and Bijapur districts in Bastar division which is prima facie used as a bunker cum dumping place.

4. Supreme Court has imposed a cumulative cost of Rs 12 lakh on six Maharashtra policemen after taking a serious note of their role in abetting illegal detention of three persons and demolition of their rented premises without any judicial order.

5. Varanasi court allows Hindus to pray in Gyanvapi mosque cellar: The district court on Wednesday ruled that a priest can perform prayers before the idols in a cellar of the Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi, a significant development in the legal battle over the mosque adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

The court has directed the local administration to make arrangements within seven days for prayers in the cellar. This will involve “proper arrangements” with metal barricades at the complex.

6. Congress scion Rahul Gandhi’s car on Wednesday came under attack during his return to West Bengal from Bihar through Malda district, during his “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra”.

1. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Interim Budget 2024 in the Lok Sabha at 11 AM.

It will be her sixth Budget presentation as Finance Minister and will be the last Budget of the current Lok Sabha. Like the previous three full Union Budgets, Interim Budget 2024 will also be delivered in paperless form. The full Union Budget will be presented once the new government is elected following General Elections 2024.

2. Paras Defence and Space Technologies announced on Wednesday, January 31, that the company has bagged an order worth ₹53 crore from the Defence Ministry for supplying Optronic Periscopes.

Periscope, optical instrument used in land and sea warfare, submarine navigation, and elsewhere to enable an observer to see his surroundings while remaining under cover, behind armour, or submerged.

3. Budget 2024: India’s Space Sector Hopes GST Exemption To Satellites : The private sector expects more favourable outcomes from the upcoming Union Budget 2024-25 which is scheduled to be tabled on Wednesday. Indian Space Association (ISpA), the industry association representing private space companies in the country, has proposed recommendations with a focus on enhancing the financial well-being of the industry.

Key recommendations include the expansion of GST exemption to satellites, launch vehicles, ground equipment manufacturing and similar exemptions on procurement of key inputs.

4. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Rolls-Royce, have signed a frame and individual license agreement on Tuesday to co-operate in the license production and localization of the MTU IMO Tier-II compliant series 4000 marine engines for governmental ships as a part of the ‘Make in India’ joint initiative.

5. The Ministry of Power, Govt of India has assigned the additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited to Geeta Kapur on Wednesday. She has been given the additional charge of the post upon NL Sharma’s superannuation on January 31. Presently, she is serving as Director (Finance) of SJVN Limited.

6. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed major business restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank, effective from February 29. The regulatory action comes in response to persistent non-compliances and material supervisory concerns identified during a comprehensive external audit of the bank’s systems.

7. Government Cuts
the import duty on parts used for mobile phone manufacturing from 10% to 15%.

‘Fighter’ movie co-writer Ramon Chibb opened up about the film. He revealed that he had written the film back in 2015, having grown up with the dream of joining the Indian Air Force, Ramon Chibb was left heartbroken when he couldn’t fulfil it due to his eyesight. However, he got a chance to tell a heartfelt story of fighter pilots and their grit through ‘Fighter’. The ex-captain of the Indian army is the co-writer of the Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer and was closely involved with director Siddharth Anand.

1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that, if anyone dares to threaten, they will have to bear the consequences as India has transformed into a powerful nation. He was ddressing the Special Session of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

2. Indian Army invites Request for Information (RFI) from the interested bidders for undertaking the Overhaul of Armoured Fighting Vehicles i.e. Tank T-72 including the provisioning of major assemblies/ sub-assemblies and spares. Indian Army stated that all DPSUs and Private Indian Vendors are eligible to respond to this RFI and participate in this project.

3. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh is scheduled to visit Visakhapatnam to preside over the Commissioning Ceremony of INS Sandhayak at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam on the 3rd of February.

4. India is becoming self-reliant in defence production, and for the first time, leading the top 25 countries in defence exports, Union minister Ajay Bhatt said. The defence exports rose from ₹4,682 crore in 2017-18 to ₹15,916 crore in 2022-23.

5. The Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and built survey ship, INS Nirupak, was decommissioned after 38 years of illustrious service to the nation in a ceremony, presided by Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, AVSM, NM, Chief Hydrographer to the Govt of India at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam on 29 January 2024.

INS Nirupak was awarded the Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy for best survey ship in the years 1994, 1995, 2005 and 2009.

6. On 30 Jan USA Ambassador Eric Garcetti praised the Indian Navy for its swift actions against pirates to rescue sailors and ensure the safety of shipping in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy’s elite marine commandos rescued 21 crew members from the Liberian-flagged vessel MV Lila Norfolk on 5 January 2024.

7. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched the ‘Jay Jawan’ campaign to provide “justice” to 1.5 lakh youth in the country who were selected for defence services but “not allowed” to join after the launch of the Agnipath scheme.
