1. India and the US have released what is called an ‘Open RAN Acceleration Roadmap’ that lays down use of next-generation telecom technologies for 5G and future 6G mobile usage.
2. The Maldivian government has signed a $37 million deal with a Turkish company for the acquisition of military drones. This is seen as an attempt to reduce dependence on Indian military that conduct surveillance in the area.

1. The US carried out new strikes in Yemen yesterday against anti-ship ballistic missiles in a Houthi-controlled part of the country as a missile struck a Greek-owned vessel in the Red Sea.
The Houthi attacks on merchant shipping vessels on the Red Sea shipping route has increased shipping costs by up to 60% for the goods destined for Europe from Asia.
2. Pakistan has recalled its ambassador from Iran and expelled Iranian ambassador to Islamabad a day after Iran launched airstrikes inside Pakistan.
Iranian missiles targeted two bases of Jaish-al-Adl, a Sunni terrorist group in the border town of Panjgur in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Jaish al Adl has previously mounted attacks on Iranian security forces in the border area with Pakistan. The strikes inside Pakistan came a day after similar attacks carried out by Tehran inside other neighbours, Iraq and Syria.
3. China has summoned the ambassador of the Philippines on Tuesday and warned the country not to play with fire. The warning comes after Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr congratulated Taiwan’s President-elect Lai Ching-te on his election victory.
4. British monarch King Charles III to have treatment for enlarged prostate next week.
5. A fireworks factory in central Thailand experienced a devastating explosion on Wednesday (Jan 17), leading to the death of at least 20 individuals.
