2. All 41 Workers Evacuated In Uttarakhand Tunnel after 17 days. The 4.5 km-tunnel is part of the Centre’s ambitious Char Dham project aimed at providing all-weather connectivity between four prominent Hindu shrines in Uttarakhand – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

(a) It is a double-lane tunnel. The project to build the tunnel is being carried out by Hyderabad-based Navayuga Engineering Company Limited, which has reportedly handled such projects before.

(b) The construction agency had initially argued that the temple of local deity Baba Baukhnag was demolished for the construction of the road tunnel, which is a part of the Centre’s ambitious Char Dham project in Uttarakhand.

(c) However, the mistake was realised soon and a small temple of the deity revered by the locals as their protector was erected at a corner of the tunnel to seek his forgiveness.

(d) Regular puja of the deity was held to bless the rescuers for accomplishing the mission. The rescue workers pulled out all the 41 labourers trapped in the tunnel on Tuesday evening, in a multi-agency operation that hovered between hope and despair for almost 17 days.

(e) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announces Rs 1 lakh each for 41 rescued workers.

(f) National Disaster Management Authority member Lt Gen (Rtd) Syed Ata Hasnain said that a very operational, professional and humanistic approach was adopted by the Centre which led to the success of the rescue operations.
