HC quashes Haryana law for 75% quota in pvt sector jobs

UNDERLINING THAT a government cannot discriminate against individuals merely because they do not belong to a particular state, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday quashed a law passed by the Haryana government in 2020 that provided 75 per cent reservation in private jobs to residents of the state.

“The Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Act, 2020 is held to be unconstitutional and violative of Part III of the Constitution of India and is accordingly held ultra vires,” a division bench of Justices G S Sandhawalia and Harpreet Kaur Jeewan said in its order.

The bench, which was hearing a clutch of petitions challenging the law, said the legislation will become “ineffective from the date it came into force”.

The Madras high court has directed four medical college and hospitals in Puducherry, including deemed universities, to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each of the 16 candidates for failing to admit him into the postgraduate medical programme even after they were allotted seats by the admission committee.

4. Andhra Pradesh High Court upholds Termination of Service of Temple Employee due to Conversion to Christianity. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has upheld Sri Bramarambha Mallikarjuna Swamy Varla Devasthanam’s (through Executive Officer) termination of the services of an employee who ceased to be a Hindu by converting to Christianity, as the act was repugnant to the requisites of the religious institution.

As per Rule 3 of AP Rules, 2000 every officeholder and servants of a religious institution or endowment shall be a person professing the Hindu Religion and he shall cease to hold office when he ceases to profess the Hindu religion.

5. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday attached four properties in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch, officials said.The properties belong to Mohd Yaseen, son of Sakhi Walayat, a resident of Dhrooti (Dabi) Tehsil Balakot Poonch.As per the anti-terrorism agency, the properties have been attached in connection with the 2021 arms, ammunition, and drug recovery case.
