UNGA vote on Gaza | India defends abstention, says resolution should have referred to October 7 terror attacks on Israel
Opposition criticises government after India abstained from a U.N. vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The government defended its decision to abstain in a U.N. General Assembly vote on resolution that called for a humanitarian truce and ceasefire in Gaza, saying it did not include “explicit condemnation” of the October 7 terror attacks in Israel. A note circulated by government sources responding to criticism from Opposition members about the vote said that since India’s concerns over omissions had not been covered by the final text of the resolution, it had decided to abstain.
1. A Qatar court has announced the death penalty for eight Indians arrested in the country last year. A ‘deeply shocked’ Indian government said that it will take up the verdict with Qatari authorities. The Qatari authorities have made the charges against the men, who are all former Indian navy officials. They were working for a defence services provider company, Dahra Global Technologies, in Qatar.
Since then, they have been kept in solitary confinement, denied bail, and now sentenced to death. All along, the Qatari authorities did not specify the reason for the detention to the families of the eight men. Dahra Global Technologies was involved in the training of Qatari navy.
2. Embassy of Israel in India has joined the “Balloons of Hope: Bring the Hostages Home” campaign in a touching display of solidarity with the families of those held hostage by Hamas since the October 7 assault.
3. The United Nations, under the leadership of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has taken a significant step toward managing the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
The United Nations has formed a 39-member advisory body, including tech leaders, academics, and government officials. Sharad Sharma from India’s iSPIRT Foundation is among the members.
4. In Australia, authorities urged thousands of people in Queensland state to evacuate as 35 bushfires raze through the region. At least 30 homes have been destroyed so far with the town of Tara being amongst areas most at risk.
5. India abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly on Friday (Oct 27) on a Jordan-led resolution that had no mention of Hamas in it. The resolution sought a ceasefire in Gaza and “unhindered” humanitarian access to the war-ravaged region.

1. Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Saturday said it has killed Rateb Abu Sahiban, the commander of Hamas’ naval forces within the Gaza City Brigade in a targeted overnight airstrike.
2. The Israeli army said Saturday its fighter jets had struck 150 “underground targets” in northern Gaza during an intense night of raids in its war against Hamas.
3. Malaysia’s royal families have elected Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar of Johor state as the country’s new king.
4. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is paying an official visit to Nepal from October 29 to November 1 at an invitation from Nepal’s Prime Minister.
5. In Bangladesh, a police constable was killed and at least 41 cops were injured in clashes between law enforcers and BNP-Jamaat men in Dhaka’s Motijheel, Kakrail and Naya Paltan areas.
Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party took out a grand rally in the Nayapaltan area of Dhaka to press home its one point demand. The BNP is pressing for the resignation of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government and handing over power to a non-partisan government to hold the next general election which is due in January, 2024.
6. 21 people have died in a mine fire at the Kostenko coal mine in 🇰🇿Kazakhstan, it was owned by steel giant Arcelor Mittal. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
