Thousands evacuated as Typhoon Haikui heads for Taiwan. Hundreds of flights cancelled and businesses closed as authorities prepared Sunday for the first tropical storm to directly hit the island in four years.

1. Governor Brian Kemp of the U.S. state of Georgia has officially declared that the month of October will be celebrated as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ within the state.

The choice of October for this celebration holds special meaning. It is the birth month of Mahatma Gandhi. October is a time when major Hindu festivals, such as Navratri and Diwali, are celebrated, making it an ideal month to honor Hindu heritage.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Indonesia starting from the 6th of this month to attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and 18th East Asia Summit.

3. Nepal rejected China’s new national map that shows territories the Himalayan nation considers its own as part of India.

4. India and four other nations – Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Philippines – registered strong protest over China’s so-called ‘standard map,’ Vietnam too rejected all claims by Beijing in the East Sea region in the Indo-Pacific.

1. Indian-origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam secured a substantial majority in the presidential elections, receiving a resounding 70.4% of the votes. He held the position of Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2019.

2. The leader of Japan’s opposition Democratic Party for the People (DPP), Tamaki Yuichiro, has won another term in Saturday’s leadership election. He is set to serve as the DPP leader until the end of September, 2026.

3. Typhoon Saola made landfall in southern China on Saturday before dawn. Nearly nine lakh people were moved to safety and most of Hong Kong and parts of the coastal mainland suspended business, transport and classes.

4. Nobel Foundation has reversed a much-criticised decision to invite Russia, Belarus and Iran to this year’s awards ceremony in Stockholm. The awards ceremony is held in Stockholm on 10th December – the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the man who established the fund.

5. Russian President Vladimir Putin will host Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks, amid bid to revive grain deal.

6. Over 100 Nobel Prize winners and global figures, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have called upon Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to halt legal proceedings against economist Muhammad Yunus. This petition follows previous concerns regarding Yunus’s safety and contributions to poverty eradication.

Muhammad Yunus, renowned for his work in microfinance, co-founded the Grameen Bank to provide collateral-free micro-credit to the impoverished.
