1. The first day of the month of Vaisakh (April 13, 14 or 15), marks the start of Hindu New Year. Variously called Baisakhi or Vaisakhi (UP, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab), Puthandu (Tamil Nadu), Vishu (Kerala), Mahabishuva Sankranti (Odisha), Rongali Bihu (Assam) and Poila Boishakh (Bengal), it is also a celebration of spring harvest.

Vishu is a traditional Hindu spring festival celebrated by the people of Kerala on first day of the Medam month on the Malayalam Calendar, making Vishu the advent of a New Year in Kerala. Vishu, thus, generally falls on the 14th or 15th of April on the Gregorian Calendar.

Pohela Boishakh, Pahela Baisakhi or Poila Baisakh, is the celebration of the Bengali New Year or Nabo Barsho in West Bengal as well as Bangladesh. Generally it falls on the 14th or 15th of April on the Gregorian Calendar. This year, Pohela Boishakh falls on 15th April, 2023.

5. Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday said the proposed government fact-check unit that will flag down “fake” online content regarding the government won’t “censor journalism”. The government earlier amended the IT Rules to add the provision of the fact-check unit.

6. The annual pilgrimage of the Amarnath Yatra will begin on July 1 for which registration will begin on April 17.

7. Andhra Pradesh & Odisha governments to ban on deep-sea fishing in territorial waters of state from April 15 to June 14.

8. Andhra Pradesh government to start rabi season’s paddy procurement from April 15 & carry out enumeration on crop loss due to untimely rains.

9. India’s tallest Ambedkar statue: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday unveiled the 125-ft tall statue of B R Ambedkar, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution. This statue of Ambedkar in Hyderabad is considered the tallest in India.

10. National Highway Authority of India has signed an MoU with the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, spread across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to facilitate seamless and efficient entry process for vehicles entering into the forest area.

11. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah to meet BJP state functionaries at Sahyadri Guesthouse, Mumbai to review BJP’s poll preparedness in Maharashtra.

12. Karnataka, farmers to hold state-wide protest rallies at all district headquarters to protest against the sale of Amul brand milk products in the state.

13. People from the Bishnoi community are protesting against the “widespread” felling of Khejri trees for setting up solar power plants in Rajasthan.

15. All state universities in Bihar will introduce four-year undergraduate degree programs under the choice-based credit system (CBCS) from the 2023-27.

CRIME REPORT/MISHAPs

1. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued summon to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi excise policy case.

2. Surendra Matiala, a Kisan Morcha leader of Delhi’s BJP, was shot dead on Friday evening in Dwarka’s Bindapur area. The 60-year-old was in his office at the time of the incident. Matiala had contested the councillor elections.

3. A group named “Hactivist Indonesia” has claimed to have issued a list of 12,000 Indian government websites, including Central and States, which it may attack in the coming days, an alert circulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) points.However, Indian government websites are “updated” and “capable” to handle such threats.

4. PM Modi has expressed his grief over the loss of lives due to an accident in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur. Eight pilgrims on their way to celebrate Baisakhi at Khuralgarh Sahib were killed, while ten were injured after being run over by a truck near Hoshiarpur.

5. Rajasthan High Court has stayed Baba Ramdev’s arrest over a case of hurting religious sentiments. The court has instructed him to appear for questioning by May 20 while hearing a petition by him seeking the quashing of the FIR.

6. Uttar Pradesh Police have said they have killed 183 alleged criminals including gangster-turned- politician Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad in the six years of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government.

7. The Bombay High Court granted bail to former BrahMos engineer, Nishant Aggarwal, who was arrested in 2018 for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. The court said that there was not enough proof that Aggarwal intentionally committed the crime.

1. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that there was a greater acceptance among Group of 20 (G20) member countries that any new regulations on the crypto assets need to be globally coordinated.

2. Recently, the central government has tightened the fund flow rulebook on Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) even further and for the first time has also brought in a ‘penal interest’ clause for delays in fund transfers by states.

3. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has announced that it will declare its standalone and consolidated financial results for the quarter ended March 31, 2023, on April 21. The company had reported consolidated net profit for the third quarter of FY23 at ₹17,806 crore, down 13.30% (YoY). Notably, Reliance Industries’ shares closed 0.39% lower at ₹2,355.65 apiece on BSE on Thursday.

DEFENCE

1. EXERCISE ORION at Mont-de-marsan:
India will deploy four Rafale jets, two C-17 aircraft and two IL-78 mid-air refuelers for a nearly three-week multinational air exercise at France’s Mont-de-Marsan military base. Notably, it will be the Rafale jets of the Indian Air Force’s first foreign exercise (17 April to 05 May).

2. The Raman Research Institute (RRI) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Navy’s research and development establishment to develop secure maritime communications using quantum technology

3. China has placed a large number of fighters, helicopters and importantly, an airborne early warning and control system and an air-to-air refuelling aircraft in three airfields in Tibet.

Earlier in 2018, after Doklam humiliation, China flexed its military muscles in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by deploying massive number of fighter jets and troops in March that year.

3. The three-day International Conference on Defence Finance and Economics concluded in New Delhi on Friday. Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari was the Chief Guest at the valedictory session of the conference.
