1. Mumbai zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday busted a major inter-State drug network and arrested five people in connection with the case.
2. Judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla, who sentenced gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed to life imprisonment, will now be provided with ‘Y+’ security due to increased threat perception. Ahmed was held guilty in the 2006 kidnapping of Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.
3. Amritsar Rural Police issued a ‘hue and cry’ notice against Amritpal Singh on Wednesday as a high alert was sounded after intelligence inputs suggested he’s likely to surrender. A hue and cry notice is the process of seeking the help of the public in nabbing a criminal. The notice describes him as around 6 feet tall with ‘fair wheatish’ complexion.
4. Punjab Police launched a massive search operation in a Hoshiarpur village and many adjoining areas following inputs that Amritpal Singh could be hiding there, the fugitive Khalistan sympathiser on Wednesday evening released his first video statement and said that he has managed to escape from the cops and “was fine and in high spirits”.
5. Soma Bharat, Kalvakuntla Kavitha’s legal counsel, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Wednesday in New Delhi after the investigation agency wrote to the BRS party MLC informing her that it would examine the mobile phones she had deposited.
6. Massive fire broke out at a plastic scrap factory on the Ujjain road in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Wednesday, following which 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. This is the second fire incident that has taken place in the city in a day.

1. The first Trade and Investment Working Group (TIWG) meeting was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad in Mumbai on Wednesday.
2. The Government has launched a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme namely, New India Literacy Programme with financial outlay of over one thousand crore rupees for implementation during the financial year 2022-23 to 2026-27.
3. National Company Law Appellate (NCLAT) on Wednesday upheld the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) Android dominance order against Google. The tribunal has upheld the penalty of 1338 crore rupees imposed by CCI.
4. Government has stepped up its efforts to monitor stock disclosures of pulses by millers, stockists, traders and importers to ensure that prices of Tur are normalised.
5. From April 1, 2023, UPI Transaction is going to be expensive. A circular related to Unified Payment Interface (UPI) payment has been issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
In a circular issued by NPCI, it has been suggested to impose a surcharge of 1.1% on transactions above Rs 2,000 from April 1. This charge will have to be given to the merchant transaction i.e. the customers paying the merchants.
6. RBI expected to deliver 25 bps hike on April 6, rate cut by December 2023.

1. Today (on 30 Mar) Bombay High Court to give its ruling on Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s plea challenging the process (summons) issued to him by a lower court in a case related to his alleged misbehaviour with a journalist in 2019.

DEFENCE
1. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) test-fired two of its short-range air-defence system (VSHORADS) missiles in March 2023. The flight tests were the second development trial of the missile. VSHORADS is a man-portable air-defence system (MANPADS) designed and developed by the DRDO and Indian industry partners.
2. Ministry of Defence, on March 29, 2023, signed three contracts – two with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad and one with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) – at a total cost nearly Rs 5,400 crore, to bolster the defence capabilities of the country.
(i) The first contract with BEL pertains to procurement of Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System ‘Project Akashteer’ worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.
PROJECT AKASHTEER
The Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System ‘Project Akashteer’. It will enable monitoring of low level airspace over the battle areas of Indian Army and effectively control the Ground Based Air Defence Weapon Systems.
(ii) The second contract with BEL relates to acquisition of Sarang Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems along with associated Engineering Support Package from BEL, Hyderabad at an overall cost of Rs 412 crore for the Indian Navy.
SARANG is an advanced Electronic Support Measure system for helicopters of the Indian Navy, designed and developed indigenously by Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Hyderabad under programme Samudrika.
(iii) The contract with NSIL, a Central Public Sector Enterprise under Department of Space, Bengaluru pertains to procurement of an advanced Communication Satellite, GSAT-7B, which will provide High Throughput Services to the Indian Army at an overall cost of Rs 2,963 crore.
ADVANCED COMMUNICATION SATELLITE : Providing mission critical beyond line of sight communication to troops and formations as well as weapon and airborne platforms. The geostationary satellite, being a first-of-its-kind in the five-tonne category, will be developed indigenously by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
All these projects are under Buy {Indian – IDMM (Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)} category.
3. The second edition of the joint military exercise, ‘The Africa-India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-2023)’, culminated on Wednesday at Foreign Training Node, Aundh, Pune.AFINDEX-2023 was held from March 16 to 29, 2023. A total of 25 African nations, 124 participants and Indian troops from the Sikh, Maratha and Mahar regiments participated in the multinational exercise.
4. China showcased the HQ-9B surface-to-air missile weapons system at Air Show China 2022. HQ-9B is an unauthorised copy of Russian S-300 air defence system.
5. French Navy’s second Suffren/Barracuda-class submarine Duguay-Trouin has started sea trials, French ship building company Naval Group revealed. The vessel kicked off sea trials on 27 March.
6. Indian Naval Ship Sumedha, deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, has entered Algiers, Algeria for an operational turn around. The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing maritime cooperation.
