Why is the sky blue?
Sunlight looks white but is made of all the colours of the rainbow. When it enters the atmosphere, the tiny gas molecules of air scatter short-wavelength blue light much more than long-wavelength red light — an effect called Rayleigh scattering, after British physicist Lord Rayleigh. This scattered blue light reaches our eyes from every direction, so the whole sky looks blue. At sunrise and sunset, sunlight passes through much more air, most of the blue is scattered away, and the remaining red and orange light colours the sky.
