1. The BJP has registered massive victories in both Assembly constituencies of West Bengal Nandigram in East Midnapore district and Rejinagar in Murshidabad district where by-elections were held.

2. In Puducherry, All India N.R. Congress candidate Ashok Anand has secured a comfortable victory with a margin of 8,482 votes for Thattanchavady Assembly constituency by-election. The seat was vacated by Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy.

3. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has won the Assembly bypolls for Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats.

4. In Assam, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma has emerged victorious in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election.

5. BJP leader Dinesh Arya has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand, with no candidate from the Congress or any other party contesting the seat.

6. Election Commission Limits Voter-Deletion Applications: The Election Commission of India has introduced a limit of ten Form 7 applications per individual, online or offline. The measure aims to strengthen safeguards against misuse of voter-deletion procedures.

7. In Telangana: The Bathukamma festival begins today across the state, celebrating Telangana’s floral traditions and cultural heritage.

8. Telangana has reportedly cleared 3,000 MW of solar power capacity with battery storage, supporting the state’s renewable-energy expansion.

9. The government has approved a 30% trade-margin cap on identified non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines, a measure intended to make treatment more affordable.

10. The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to name Noida International Airport at Jewar Narendra Modi International Airport.

11. Ladakh has launched India’s first high-altitude wildlife safari with six open-back vehicles operating initially in Rumbak, Shang and Uley to promote regulated tourism and snow leopard conservation.

12. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams in New Delhi on 8 October 2026 to strengthen community participation in India’s fight against tuberculosis (TB).

13. The Central Government has selected 13 members for the Press Council of India (PCI) with six being working journalists under editors category and seven being working journalists other than editors. The selection of members has been done according to the Press Council Act, 1978 and reconstitution of the 15th term of the PCI. Head of the PCI is Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Retd.), Supreme Court judge.

14. P. Vasu, popularly known as ‘Socio’ Vasu, died at his residence in Cheruvannur, Kozhikode, on 8 October 2026, aged 103. Born in January 1923, he became involved in the national movement during his school years and later joined the socialist movement after India’s independence.

1. Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed protest by the CJP at Jantar Mantar today. The Court called for regulated operation of Delhi Metro and railway services rather than a complete shutdown during the proposed October 10 protest.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is set to stage a significant protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amidst allegations of electoral irregularities and controversial voter roll deletions.

2. Madhya Pradesh OBC Reservation: The Madhya Pradesh High Court struck down a 27% OBC reservation provision, describing the law as unconstitutional and passed in undue haste.

3. The Supreme Court rejected a plea seeking the disqualification of 21 AIADMK legislators.
Voter-Deletion Applications: The Election Commission reportedly introduced a limit on Form 7 applications to strengthen scrutiny and prevent misuse of voter-deletion procedures.

4. The Indian Railways has warned of punitive action, including imprisonment, against passengers who play audio/video on speaker mode, causing inconvenience to others on trains and at railway premises.

5. JNU dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress MP, over sexual harassment allegations following an internal committee inquiry.

At least 11 female students reportedly filed complaints in May, alleging Akoijam invited them to his residence for harassment and made inappropriate remarks.

A fire broke out in the medicine room of the Government Civil Hospital affiliated with the Medical College in Godhra, Gujurat. The event prompted the evacuation of more than 200 patients, including pregnant women. Firefighters and police rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. There were casualties in the incident while premilinary investigations suggest a fire from a short circuit.

1. The Indian Coast Guard commissioned the indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Ajit at Goa Shipyard Limited on 9 October. The vessel will be based at Okha to strengthen coastal surveillance and maritime security.

2. BEML secured an order worth approximately ₹75.58 crore for military vehicle exports and maintenance services in Southeast Asia.

3. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N S Raja Subramani chairs a meeting with other officials during the inauguration of the residential accommodation for Senior Sailors and Defence Civilians of the Indian Navy along with critical trunk utility and amenity infrastructure as part of Project Seabird Phase IIA at Naval Base, in Karwar on Thursday.

The 57th meeting of the GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was held on October 8th 2026, in New Delhi. In this meeting there were several reforms passed which are related to processes and compliance under the GST regime. These included removal of the arrest powers of the GST tax officers, increasing the threshold for initiation of prosecution from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore and faster refunds.
