Sawan Barwal delivered a stunning performance to win India a historic silver in the men’s marathon at the Asian Games on Saturday (September 26, 2026), setting a new national record in the process. The 28-year-old Army athlete from Himachal Pradesh clocked 2:11:37 to finish behind Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita (2:10:49), with China’s Peiyou Feng taking bronze in 2:12:13. Barwal’s silver is India’s first Asian Games marathon medal since Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan’s bronze in 1982 and makes him only the fourth Indian to win a medal in the event.
It is an incredible achievement for Barwal as this is his second national record in as many races in his career.
He shifted to the marathon only this year after running in other long distance races such as 5,000m, 10,000m and half marathon.
President Droupadi Murmu and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya have congratulated Indian marathon runner Sawan Barwal on winning the silver medal in the men’s marathon at the 2026 Asian Games, ending a 44-year wait for a podium finish in the event.
