Amritsar, September 21, 2026: Fresh from winning the inaugural Sher-E-Punjab T20 Cup, Amritsar Soormas held a special press conference at Gandhi Ground, Amritsar, to celebrate their historic triumph. The team defeated Ludhiana Lions by eight wickets in the final to become the first champions of the tournament.
Team owners Dr. Shahbaz Singh, Ankur Aggarwal and Ajay Kwatra congratulated the players, coaching and support staff, team management and supporters, describing the victory as a proud moment for Amritsar and another milestone in the city’s sporting journey.
The occasion was attended by Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar, President, Chief Khalsa Diwan and MLA, Amritsar South; S. Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia, Mayor of Amritsar; S. Jaswinder Singh, MLA, Attari; S. Gurmander Singh, SDM, Amritsar II; representatives of the Amritsar Games Association; members of the coaching staff and other distinguished guests.
The team owners also acknowledged the contribution of the Amritsar Games Association (AGA) towards developing cricketing talent in the region. Players including Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Kumar, Jai Pratap Johal and Abhay Chaudhary are among those to have emerged from the local cricketing system.
The owners highlighted the significance of having two Amritsar Soormas players in India’s senior setup. Abhishek Sharma is an established member of India’s T20I side, while Naman Dhir has earned his maiden senior-team selection for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies.
Dhir was also named Player of the Series for his outstanding performances during the tournament, with his explosive knock in the semi-final playing a crucial role in Amritsar Soormas’ run to the final.
The inaugural Sher-E-Punjab T20 Cup featured six teams and 27 matches from August 30 to September 13, with all matches played at the I.S. Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali. The tournament provided emerging cricketers from Punjab with an opportunity to compete alongside experienced and established players.
In the final, Ludhiana Lions posted 142/9 in 20 overs after being put in to bat. Amritsar Soormas chased down the target in 16.4 overs, finishing on 144/2 to win by eight wickets.
Mayank Markande was named Player of the Match after taking 3/17, while Sahaj Dhawan top-scored with an unbeaten 63. Rahul Kumar remained unbeaten on 42, with captain Naman Dhir contributing a quick 29.
The Amritsar Soormas squad comprised Abhishek Sharma (Captain), Mayank Markande, Naman Dhir, Rahul Kumar, Sahil Khan, Jashanpreet Sidhu, Sahaj Dhawan, Abhay Chaudhary, Dhruv Rahul Jindal, Revan Preet Singh, Prabhjit Singh, Ishan Sood, Adhiraj Singh Mangat, Dhruv Bhagania, Shubham Rana, Ishmeet Singh Sandhu, Navneet Virk, Akash Pandey, Vaibhav Kalra, Jaipratap Singh Johal and Deepin Chitkara.
The team owners said the franchise’s vision goes beyond winning trophies, with a focus on providing young cricketers from Amritsar and Punjab with a professional platform to develop their talent and aspire towards representing the state and country.
They thanked the Punjab Cricket Association, supporters, cricket lovers and the media for their contribution to the team’s championship campaign, adding that the triumph would inspire more youngsters from Amritsar to pursue cricket at the highest level.
Following the press conference, the Amritsar Soormas players were felicitated by S. Inderbir Singh Nijjar and other distinguished guests with mementoes and Apple iPads. The management also felicitated the distinguished guests and hosted lunch, tea and coffee for members of the media.
The historic triumph marks a memorable beginning for Amritsar Soormas and adds another proud chapter to Amritsar’s sporting identity.
