1. The Court of Enquiry Commissioner and Special Judge (Vigilance), Kottayam, on Thursday (September 17, 2026) sentenced retired Director General of Police (DGP) Tomin J. Thachankary to four years in prison in a long-standing disproportionate assets case.
2. The Supreme Court heard issues concerning Hindi teaching and the establishment of Navodaya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu, with the court saying states cannot act as separate countries.
3. The Supreme Court has asked the Manipur Chief Secretary to file an affidavit concerning deaths, particularly unnatural deaths, in relief camps.
4. The Government has refuted allegation that the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI has been introduced because of external pressure. Department of Financial Services in Ministry of Finance said, the allegation is patently false and misleading. It said that the introduction of MDR on select high-value transactions will enable more domestic companies to operate under UPI.
5. The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act will come into force on 1st of October this year. Registrar General of India, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan said the provisions of the newly enacted law that tightens regulations for delayed registration of births and deaths will come into force on 1st of October this year.
The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, passed by both Houses of Parliament, became the law after the President’s assent last month.

T-SHUL BEAM showcased its capability to neutralise aerial drone threats through soft-kill electronic countermeasures, underlining the growing focus on indigenously developed technologies to counter the expanding threat posed by drones in modern warfare.
