The name Bihar is derived from the Sanskrit and Pali word vihār (विहार), meaning “abode”.
The word ‘Bihar’ has originated from the ‘Viharas’ which means resting house of Buddhist monk but it was the Muslim rulers of 12th Century who started calling the state as ‘Bihar’.
Bihar is the birth place of Buddhism because it is the place where the divine light of enlightenment was showered on Gautama Buddha. It was a place where Buddha attained enlightenment, delivered his first sermon which was called “Dharma Chakra Pravartana”, and announced his “Parinirvana”.

Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami, the eighth day of Krishna Paksha, the waning phase of the Moon, in the month of Shravana or Bhadrapada, depending on regional lunar calculations. Since the Hindu calendar follows lunar cycles, the festival date changes every year in the Gregorian calendar. Janmashtami is observed in one of the following months:
Shravana month – according to the Amanta calendar followed in regions such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Bhadrapada month – according to the Purnimantha calendar followed in North India and many other regions.
The day of Janmashtami is not just about remembering his birth but about reconnecting with the spiritual values and teachings he represents. Krishna is regarded as the Supreme Divine who descended to earth in human form to restore balance when goodness declines. Janmashtami reminds devotees of dharma, faith, and the divine presence in everyday life. Krishna teaches Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Janana Yoga, which emphasize performing one’s duty without attachment and surrendering to God with devotion and wisdom.
