1. The Parliament has passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha returning the legislation to the Lok Sabha after a discussion. The Lok Sabha had passed it on Monday. The bill amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, for increasing the number of Judges of the Apex Court from the present 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India). In May this year, President Droupadi Murmu had promulgated an ordinance to increase the number of Supreme Court Judges from 33 to 37.
2. The Lok Sabha has passed the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026. The bill seeks to provide a law relating to evidence with respect to bankers’ books and to align it with contemporary digital banking practices. It aims to modernise the legal framework to meet the requirements of the present banking system. The Bill also has a provision that an electronic or digital record of a banker’s book will be admissible, valid, and legally enforceable as evidence.
3. Around 1.8 lakh electors have been excluded from Meghalaya’s draft electoral roll published on Wednesday (August 5, 2026) after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) identified them as deceased, shifted, untraceable or duplicate.
4. The seventh anniversary of the revocation of Article 370 was observed on 5 August. On 5 August 2019, the Government of India effectively revoked its special status through a Presidential Order and parliamentary resolutions.
The state was reorganized under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 into two Union Territories:
Jammu and Kashmir
Ladakh.
5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that lives of people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have witnessed wide ranging transformation since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35(A) seven years ago. In a social media post, PM Modi highlighted that the infrastructure has expanded, opportunities in areas such as education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and sports have grown in both the Union Territories.
6. In the year 2025, India has achieved a milestone in the organ transplantation, as it saw total 20,138 organs transplanted through the year, as per the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) Annual Report 2025–26. Released during the commemoration of the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day, Tamil Nadu is noted in the report to be leading the nation in deceased organ donations made with the help of 266 deceased donors in the year.
7. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on 5 August 2026 to seek Central intervention in the long-pending dispute with Maharashtra over the proposed height of the Tummidihatti barrage. The barrage is part of the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project and is planned at Tummidihatti village in Kouthala mandal of the erstwhile Adilabad district on the Pranahita River.
8. Tamil Nadu allocated ₹44,527 crore to the School Education Department in its maiden budget for the financial year 2026-27. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the budget on 5 August 2026, and the allocation placed school education among the largest spending heads in the state budget.

An Interstate Co-ordination Meeting was held yesterday at the Delhi Police Headquarters ahead of the Independence Day Celebrations-2026 to strengthen co-operation and co-ordination among various Law Enforcement Agencies and to address issues related to ensuring incident-free Independence Day celebrations.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the revised edition of the TRAI MyCall mobile application to better involve the consumers in judging the quality of voice calling services. This new application was introduced on August 3rd, 2026, it allows mobile customers to express their views on the quality of voice calls in real time with the parameters of the network.
12. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya. The IMD has also issued an orange-colour warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall conditions over Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

1. The Maharashtra government has completely banned the manufacture, sale, storage, transportation and distribution of analog or artificial cheese across the state, according to an order issued by food safety commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on July 30.

The Union Government has informed the Supreme Court that it has undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) examination processes following the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, asserting that a multi-layered, end-to-end security architecture has now been put in place to safeguard the integrity of national entrance examinations.
5. The Supreme Court of India on 4 August 2026 directed a 10-kilometre mining buffer zone around all wetland conservation reserves in India. The order extended the buffer first applied to the Asan Wetland Conservation Reserve in Uttarakhand to similar protected areas across the country.
6. The Supreme Court of India on 4 August 2026 directed an extension of the mandatory third-party insurance period for new private cars and two-wheelers. It provides legal liability cover for injury, death, or property damage caused to a third party by the insured vehicle. For new private cars, the mandatory third-party insurance period has been increased from three years to four years.

An Indian-flagged commercial vessel, MSV Faize Noore Oliya, sank in the Red Sea after coming under attack off the coast of Yemen yesterday. All the 14 seafarers, including 13 Indian nationals, who were on board the vessel were rescued safely.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the attack on the Indian-flagged vessel, saying the continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome.
