The Mauryan Empire, which formed around 321 B.C.E. and ended in 185 B.C.E., was the first pan-Indian empire, an empire that covered most of the Indian region. It spanned across central and northern India as well as over parts of modern-day Iran.

The Maurya Empire was centralized by the conquest of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and its capital city was located at Pataliputra (modern Patna).

Vyasa, the narrator of the Mahabharata, is hagiographically credited as the compiler of the Puranas.

उप्तं सुकृतबीजं हि सुक्षेत्रेषु महाफलम् ।

uptaṃ sukṛtabījaṃ hi sukṣētrēṣu mahāphalam ।
भावार्थ: सही स्थान पर बोया गया सुकर्म का बीज ही महान् फल देता है।

Meaning : The seed of good works, sown in the right place gives great results.
